Is it worth seeing a doctor?

So I had a baby two years ago and since then I've noticed a fair few changes within my health some ive experienced for years,
these are:-

  • extremely itchy flacky scalp I've spent £100s of pounds on dandruff treatmemts/shampoos nothing works.

  • extremely itchy skin to the point that my skin has scared from me scratching it.

*Blurred vision that seems to be getting worse. I had a eye test 2months ago and no abnormalities were found.

  • I get cold very easily

*pain and numbness in my right arm and hand, I cant sleep on the side as it's too painful. This issue is also starting to affect my job.

*pins and needle sensation in my feet.

*weight gain

*I get dizzy when I stand or bend down or even just move to quickly.

  • i can feel my heart race regularly

*excessively sweat

*extremely heavy periods

  • I feel jittery and on edge all the time.

  • my whole body aches, no amount of rest, warm baths and pain killers fix it.

  • I feel unnecessarily tired all the time it's affecting almost all aspects of my daily life as I've no energy. I'm scared to even sit down in the day as I instantly fall asleep. Come 1pm onwards i feel a very rapid crash in energy levels.

My mum very suddenly died last year. It was mentioned that she had some underlying issues with her thyroid. Her main symptom of this was very high blood pressure, due to this she died of two large brain aneurysms which popped at the same time, she was only 58.
My dad also died of a brain aneurysm he was 42 and his mum died of a abdominal aneurysm at the age of 41.

I have epilepsy which has been controlled for 13 years with medication. I'm only 34 and don't want to die young like my parents.

Should I go and have a chat with my GP? Can and what tests can I request?. I'm very awkwardly autistic and am not brave enough to advocate for myself. I'm worried that they'll fob me off telling me it's normal because im running around after a small child all day, I have spoken to them last year regarding my heavy periods and all they wanted to do was fit a coil which I feel isn't getting to the bottom of the issue.

Has anyone suffered with these symptoms and it's turned out to be a thyroid issue? what happend? Were you offered tests? Will i need my thyroid removed? Im sorry for the long post i need a mum right now and this is the best place to find one.

Yes of course you should see your GP

KittenPause · 03/04/2025 12:45

Write a list of r everything you want to ask to help you stick to the point and stay calm

lurchermummy · 03/04/2025 12:57

Yes when I was reading your post the first thing I thought of was thyroid. Yes do please go and have a chat with them.

KittenPause · 03/04/2025 13:07

Thyroid
perimenopause
low blood pressure
are possibilities

KittenPause · 03/04/2025 13:08

My DD took the pill effectively to reduce her heavy periods and a coil may well work for you. It’s a normal solution

Lillabetty · 03/04/2025 13:46

@KittenPause perimenopause has crossed my mind as my mum started at 35 shortly after her last pregnancy, and I'm sure my nan (mums mum) started perimenopause around mid 40s

My periods are between 28-42 days. The flow differs, though I've noticed every 3-4 periods I'll have a "normal" flow, which is incredibly painful. My "normal" i have to wear maternity pads and tampons at the same time, changing my tampon every 45 minutes to an hour, but these periods are not painful. It's very confusing.

Totally sounds like thyroid to me. I have Hashimotos (hypothyroidism) since birth of DS2 10 years ago….

Lillabetty · 03/04/2025 14:10

@amyboo what were your symptoms if you don't mind me asking? Were you offered any tests at all

you can try something called tranexamic acid for the heavy periods really good and not hormonal.

Given all the other issues though if I were you, I would go straight to the GP and ask for a double appointment so they don’t fob you off by saying they can only listen to one problem at a time good luck

its2025 · 03/04/2025 14:12

Yes i think it would be very sensible to go to your GP.
Perhaps write a list of your symptoms as you have done above and take that with you. Explain each one to the GP even take a pen and tick off the list as you go down so you can be sure not to miss anything.
Explain about your Mum and that you are worried about your thyroid. I'm sure they will help you.

re- blood pressure - in my surgery they have a blood pressure machine that anyone can just walk in and use. That may help reassure you if you have to wait a long time for an appointment.

Ask if you have a specialist in female medicine at your surgery and ask for them perhaps?

Lillabetty · 05/04/2025 15:53

So I was brave and made an appointment for the end of the month which I thought was rather quick just for a routine, now I'm worried they're not going to take me seriously 😐

All your symptoms seem to relate to a problem with the thyroid gland.

Do you have a relation or female friend who can give you some moral support?.

Read Thyroid UKs website. It’s full of good information and is not woo.

So a little update, I saw the Dr this morning and I've already forgotten most of what they said they requested a full blood count and thyroid bloods, I think I've scared her alittle bit with how I was describing my heart etc I cant remember what numbers but my blood pressure had 133 in it and she said that's high she's requested that I loan a blood pressure cuff for 7days she's requested a fecal test and a urine test. There is a family history of heart disease. Do you think she thinks I've got a bad heart? I'm very confused
