Contraception for a 17 year old, which one?

DD (17) wants to go on some form of contraception. She has a newish boyfriend, they haven't had sex yet and will use condoms when and if they do.

However, she wants to make absolutely sure she doesn't get pregnant so wants to use something else as well.

She can't take the pill as it doesn't agree with her, she's has tried three types for period issues and her mood was so low and she had constant breakthrough bleeding.

She's keen to try the patch but I think the implant may be better as it lasts 3 years.

She has a GP appointment in 7 weeks! But she's keen to get sorted asap, so would the sexual health clinic be better.

I would appreciate views on the patch or implants if you've tried it please.

If she has the implant and has issues with it, it’s going to take a lot longer to sort that it would for an issue with a patch.
Why are you keen for her to have the implant if she has said she is keen to try the patch?

My dd had a copper coil fitted at 16 (17 now, had it a year). The pill didn’t get on with her so she wasn’t willing to risk her health trying 101 other forms of hormonal contraception, gp agreed. We’re not in the uk though, was fitted by hospital gyno

OP just as an aside make sure she asks her partner to be STI tested before they do have sex

A bit of a minefield! I had a copper coil but it made my already painful periods debilitating.

It may be worth trying different pills, however completely understand if she doesn't want to due to poor past experiences. I finally found a pill that didn't make me cry all the time on attempt 4 (cerelle).

It's great that you're so open with her about this and are navigating it together.
