Please recommend a clinic that will fit Mirena coil under sedation

57, on HRT, mirena plus topical oestrogen gel.

I had my Mirena removed today after 5 years, which was agony. I’m a tough old bird, but I actually screamed violently as it was being dragged out.
Nurse was very professional and kind, but in trying to then fit my new coil, she had to stop as it was excruciating.
I took pain meds before but to no avail.
She’s sent me home with a prescription for oral progesterone to take in the meantime and will call me in 2 weeks to see if I want to ‘have another go’.
Having had multiple rounds of IVF, x 2 C sections and a D&C I’m reasonably resilient when it comes to my nunny being messed with…but I really can’t attempt another coil fitting. Nothing has ever hurt me as much.

So, as I sit here cramping, googling furiously has anyone had a coil inserted under sedation or GA? If so, where?

I will happily pay for sedation/general anaesthetic as I tolerated the Mirena very well (once it’s in place !) and it would be preferable/easier than oral progesterone.

Any steers gratefully received.

Contact the gynae department of your local private hospital, I’m sure they’ll be able to.

im wondering if it’s because you had c sections, I barely felt it when I got mine, we definitely all built differently! Hope you get it sorted

Thanks, I will do, but I’m very rural out in the sticks. Was hoping for a recommendation from someone who has had sedation/GA for Mirena fitting, as prepared to travel for somewhere good.

I’m about to have one fitted privately as the wait is too long at my GPs

there’s a clinic near me that fits with gas & air, in Reading, they have a few other locations

I had to stop when they tried to fit my Mirena 4 years ago as the pain was so intense. My GP referred me to Gynae and I had an appt where I went on a waiting list to have it fitted under GA. 3 weeks later I was on the Ward at 2pm, down to theatre an hour later, awake at 4.30pm and discharged home at 5.30pm. If they can't fit due to pain I would ask GP to refer to gynae to have it done. I was in my 50s and not prepared to go through pain like that when I didn't have to.

Hi @Metabee I'm in a similar position and I wondered if you managed to find a service that would do this? I'm in SE London and my private gynae will do this but sadly she now only operates in Harley Street which is well out of my budget at around £3.5k! Hoping to find an alternative somewhere in Kent/elsewhere in the home counties for a more reasonable price.

Is there any reason why you can't continue with the tablets? Or I believe you can get patches with progesterone.

TheLurpackYears · 28/06/2025 08:47

Definitely restart loading dose of vaginal eostrogen before your next attempt, internal and extermal. Slap it on. Even if you are sedated and can't feel the pain, it will guard against damaging the atrophied tissue. You can take the progesterone vaginally if it upsets you stomach, a site like MenopNot Mad or Balance Menopause will give the correct dose.
I don't think I'd even get one on the NHS in my area at 57, I'm 10 years younger than you and this might be my last one.

OP did you have any luck with this???? I’m just desperately trying to find someone to insert Mirena under twilight sedation or GA but having no luck in Kent..

NHS wait at least ten months to see gynacologist apparently…

I saw London Women's Clinic in Surrey (Guildford) and while it was not under sedation, they were really kind and helpful and there was plentiful local anaesthetic (topical and injected).

Oh thank you! I’ve called them already 😁 they are a long way from me though but if I can’t find someone else they may be my go to!

Yes, they're a pretty long way from me too. DH kindly drove me but it basically took an entire day! Worth it.
