WARNING Graphic photo - my periods are just clots

my last few periods just seem to be big clots rather than a flow, they have also become irregular after 20 years of 28/29 day cycles. Prior to the past six months I was only late for my period the two times I was pregnant

Been trying to get a drs appointment and when I do get one I don't want to be fobbed off this is really irregular for me. How can I make myself heard and has anyone else had clots like this? I'm probably passing ones like this which is about the size of a malteaser sometimes bigger than that 10 times a day when I am 'on'

I've had this sporadically for the last 2-3 years.

I'm 55, definitely Going Through The Change, and have had fibroids for some time. You don't say how old you are, but the "20 years" comment suggests younger than me?

ISTHISALINE · 12/03/2025 22:49

I pass clots, some this size and some bigger. I have endometriosis and this is the norm for me. But if it’s new to you I’d definitely go to the GP and be firm, lay it on thick if you have to. But I’d make sure they take you seriously and try not let them fob you off!

I had more frequent, heavier periods and lots of clots. Had an ultrasound that revealed a polyp and after a long time on a waiting list had polyp removed plus mirena coil inserted and now barely have a period at all.

Mrs86 · 12/03/2025 22:53

I had something similar, passing clots the size of my palm! I have pcos though and was bleeding for the best part of a year. I was sent for a scan and told I had a thick uterine lining and was being caused by too much oestrogen. I was referred for a mirena coil fitting and this stopped my period. More or less the next day. I didn't want anymore children at the time so it worked for me. Keep ringing the doctors and don't let them fob you off with tablets to just stop the bleeding. I was also a smoker and never believed them when they said smoking causes heavy bleeding. I have stopped now and my periods have never been as heavy again. I did have the mirena removed as I wanted to try to get pregnant again. My irregular bleeding is back but nowhere as heavy or clotty.

Two of my sisters have endo. I have always had 'normal' periods until now. I haven't also had bowel issues ramp up the past few years so I do wonder. Need to push for a scan I think.

I'm no doctor. I would definitely get it checked out but I've noticed this the last few years too, definitely more clotty that I used to be I'm only 33 and I'd say its been since I had my child 4 years ago. But that lines up with when I came off the contraceptive pill so maybe this was normal for me all along..

DoYouReally · 12/03/2025 23:25

This is normal for me but I've endometriosis and fibroids.

Might be worth seeing a gynaecologist.

Pepperama · 12/03/2025 23:36

I had this. Mirena cool sorted it all, as well as the hormonal migraines. Best thing ever for me. But depends if you’re done with having a family

Devonshiregal · 12/03/2025 23:47

This isn’t normal? Mine have always been like this. I was wondering the other day how much blood people actually lose? Like pads/tampons - how many do you use during a period? I really don’t know what is normal

So for 20 years I would use 4 normal tampons during the day and one night time pad overnight. On the last day would be light tampons.

Now it's super plus tampons 5/6 a day and double protection pad and super plus tampon overnight sometimes with a change

Ooh thank you for replying. It’s so interesting as I think we all think our normal is ‘normal’ until you have these conversations. For me it would be like at least double more like triple that. Makes it easier to go to gp and say this isn’t ok if you have knowledge

I’m the same. It’s hard to know what’s normal. I have some flooding and Gp was really dismissive as my periods are short but I can go change tampon and pad and go wash hands and feel it soaking through. Only for a day so Gp seemed to think it wasn’t really an issue.

TheChosenTwo · 13/03/2025 09:44

I’ve got PCOS and every period I’ve ever had since starting them have been clots. Quite large too. To the point where I looked at your photo and was confused as to what the problem was as to me it’s my only type of period and my absolute normal.
But you should ask to get checked out as any change to ‘your normal’ should be looked at.

TheChosenTwo · 13/03/2025 09:46

And yes, my periods consist of 2 days of at least 12 super heavy plus tampons plus towels plus 4 changes of knicker for the inevitable flooding and then maybe 4 days of just the super tampons but it’s normal to me!!

It’s yes! And of course if you get a gp who hasn’t experienced this, how are they to know how debilitating it is? But every month having a day where you can’t walk anywhere and basically just shuffle from sitting position to sitting position, and the psychological stress of not being able to sleep because you’re going to leak everywhere is awful. Plus it impacts iron levels.

HomeBodyClub · 13/03/2025 20:18

I once passed clots the size of my hand.. Never did find out why.

I would push for a gynaecology appointment as it’s new and not normal for you.
