Biopsy Results - Viral Changes

Hi,

I posted a few weeks ago about a 2 week referral to gynae where I had a colposcopy with biopsies taken. Today I got the letter that says “We now have the result of your biopsy, showing just viral changes. There is no pre-cancer or cancerous change. Kindly get in touch with us should your irregular bleeding persist.”

Obviously I’m extremely relieved and happy there is no cancer or pre cancer and they obviously don’t want a follow up or anything, unless my bleeding persists but I have a couple of questions that I wonder if anyone can answer.

I assume the viral changes are HPV - is it likely this will go on its own? I’m due a routine smear in May - if it’s still there, will it be a concern or does it take longer to disappear?

The bleeding I had was only spotting on occasion after sex and mid cycle and that was explained by erosion, so if it stays as occasional spotting and isn’t bothering me do I still need to get back in touch?

Thanks for any help!

Hi

As far as I know, our bodies can get rid of HPV on its on and it’s likely we have all had it at one point. It’s when we can’t get rid of it and/or it can effect our cervical cells which can cause abnormal smear results and cell changes.

I have cervical erosion too and used to get spotting after sex but it settled eventually.
Are you on the pill? I was told years ago that can weaken the cervix lining. I have been off the pill for about 5 years now but when I had my last smear the nurse did say she come see some minor erosion still.

No, no contraception for me. The gynae consultant reckoned it was probably peri related, although from what I’ve read it’s associated with more oestrogen. I suppose fluctuating hormones could probably cause it though.

I think from what I understand now, if it’s still showing on my smear in May then I will probably have them yearly until it clears or potentially progresses and then there would be treatment.
