Resistant thrush that gp doesn't know how to treat.

I've been experiencing thrush symptoms since the beginning of the year, although nhs swabs detected nothing I had a private swab done that detected Candida glabrata. I've had rounds and rounds of pesserys and tablets but nothing works. Does anyone know how to treat this? Its now causing cystitis like symptoms too and my gp said it might "go on its own" whilst I'm literally in agony.

Have you tried using live yoghurt vaginally?

Hereandthereandeverywhere · 09/03/2025 14:59

You need to get it cultured to see which treatment will work. Your local sexual health clinic is probably your best bet if the GP isn't great.

Have you taken an oral antifungal medication and used as well as topical cream/pessary? It’s the only thing that cuts it for me.

Kellyjelly33 · 09/03/2025 15:09

Is it still thrush? Vaginal atrophy can have very similar symptoms.

EDJG · 09/03/2025 15:46

It's definitely candida glabrata, the nhs doesn't normally test for this strain, neither does the gum clinic. It's normally hospital acquired and resistant to fluconazole.
I've taken lots of probiotics, done pesserys, tablets and it's not budging.

There are other anti fungal drugs other than fluconazole.

(I am under 2 specialists for recurrent invasive Candida, mainly oral, due to autoimmune issues and thankfully Fluconazole somewhat works for me so I’m on 50mg daily permanently but I know there are alternatives as we’ve discussed them for when / if Fluconazole no longer works).

What I mean is, you know what culture it is. You need to have it cultured for sensitivities. I work in sexual health, we treat resistant thrush all the time

HolidayBrochure · 09/03/2025 22:03

What probiotics have you taken specifically? And for how long?

You need lactobacillus reuteri and rhamnosus. Acidophilus isn't going to cut it.

I've been taking optibac for women. Unfortunately as this yeast now seems to be in my bladder I'm not sure how I'm going to shift it. 😫

How old are you? Did your swabs come back positive for thrush? I say this because I went to the GP with recurrent thrush and when they swabbed it never read positively. I'm now on HRT - turns out it was a peri symptom! Might be worth mentioning to your GP

Edited

I'm 32 and yes it came up on the swab, it's just not a strain that's common apparently. I'm also on the contraceptive pill as I have endometriosis.

Up the dosage on your probiotics, take two or three a day. Also apply live yoghurt directly to your vagina.

Another option could be to mix the contents of the probiotic capsules with the live yoghurt and apply it that way.

I hope you get relief soon, it's miserable.

Peoplearebloodyidiots · 11/03/2025 13:43

What is your diet like?

Darkclothes · 11/03/2025 13:45

Is your partner being treated too? (if applicable)

Are you anaemic? Any deficiencies? The only time I got recurrent thrush was when I was severally anaemic. Once that was corrected, I've never had one since.

I have a b12 deficiency which I was told to buy supplements for by my gp, no treatment for DP as no chance he's going anywhere near me like this.

@EDJG sorry to jump on your old post, but would you be able to tell me where you had your private swab done please? Going through the same thing. Thanks
