38 week wait for colposcopy appointment!?

Hello,

I am going out of my mind with worry and need some wise words of experience to calm me down lol.

Brief history: 2 smears in a row have been hpv positive (previous year did not get a smear as was pregnant). I have also several times in the past had hpv positive results and thus have been on annual smears. Have been referred for colposcopy where I have been informed the current wait time is 38 weeks ☹️!

I had a LLETZ procedure 17 years ago (not sure what kind of cells they were tbh, I didn't ask, young and naive!). Would you say having previously had a LLETZ and several HPV positive smears makes me more high risk? Or not at all?

It's only been 8 weeks so far since my last results and I've no idea how I'm gonna handle the 30 week further wait!

I'm so sorry you're having to wait so long op; it is really stressful. I have a colposcopy thread going on myself at the moment, so I wanted to give yours a bump for you.

In my case I've had a hysteroscopy, which was benign, and 3 x cervical punch biopsies on the outer cervix, all have came back as inadequate specimens. Having to go back a fourth time!

I'm so sorry you're going through this, and 38 weeks is ridiculous. My smears have all been negative, but I was referred on 2ww due to a suspicious legion which bled on contact. It's been a nightmare ever since, but I was at least seen quick.

Could you ring the gp/colposcopy unit and query this? Are you on a cancellation list? That wait is crazy, especially when you've has issues in the past. I thought they had to check you within a few weeks. Definitely query it op.

Definitely worth calling the hospital and getting no the cancellation list. My local hospital got me a cancellation appointment much quicker :). Hope you get sorted soon. Sorry to hear it's such a long wait.

What????? I cannot believe that this wait it true.

so I’m in similar position. Two abnormal smears, cold last year: cin 1.
Repeat smear Feb, HPV positive and abnormal cells again. Colposcopy app arranged under the 4 weeks wait schedule.

that wait is rediculous and def goes against the nice guidelines.

calk up and double check if I were u. The whole point of these screenings is the catch cell changes before the turn to cancer, even if that process is most of time over many years.

Here is the NICE guideline and what’s published on the government nhs pathway webpage:

  • Borderline Changes or Low-Grade Dyskaryosis:
  • Individuals with borderline changes in squamous or endocervical glandular cells, or low-grade dyskaryosis, should be seen within 8 weeks.
  • HR-HPV Positive Result:
  • If a person has an HR-HPV positive result and low-grade dyskaryosis or borderline changes, they should be referred to colposcopy within 8 weeks.

Hugh grade abnormal cells again changes are under the 2 weeks wait schedule pathways.

when I called my local team I was told I was out under the 4 weeks wait schedule pathway

get on the phone and explain the 38 weeks wait is against the guidelines. Thats just rediculous imo

Hello,

So it's now been 36 weeks on waitlist, I've called the NHS on 4 occasions to chase it up and ensure I'm on the cancellation list.

Having read the NICE guidelines, I'm not sure I do fall into the 8 week category as whilst I do have HR HPV positive result they didn't state in the letter that there was any changes, just the HPV positive?

Anyways I just remembered I never followed up on this thread! Thank you for the comments of support, the wait continues 😫!

That’s unreal
i also have the pleasure of having HPV and the accompanying dodgy cells and hospital visits and I’ve never had to wait more than 2-3 weeks for a colposcope after my smear result

Wkanznjs · 23/09/2025 16:55

This is absolutely shocking

fedup078 · 23/09/2025 17:03

Although where I am it’s 3 smears in a row before going to colposcope so you would have been waiting another year for another smear anyway

cinnamonbunlover · 23/09/2025 18:03

I had a 16 week wait it’s ridiculous.

Im not sure if it's because I skipped a year as didn't get one whilst pregnant but I did get a positive result previous year prior to that so it has been 3 positive results in the space of 4 years...

It actually blows my mind when I think that it will of been a year since my last smear by time I get the colposcopy! My smear was in October, results didn't arrive until beginning of January. Still no appointment through and we are rapidly approaching October now 😕. It gets drummed into us when young to always go for your smear it could save your life etc and then they induce this panic by not following through with further investigations!? Anyways sorry just having a rant lol

Ah that makes sense so it is 3 in a row
its shit isn’t it
this whole thing is bad enough without the extra wait.
tbh I’m overdue , was meant to go in May and had a test booked for Monday just gone but had to cancel and now can’t book another for a month.
my colposcopy showed no cell changes last June though so I would think nothing too sinister can occur in that time but honestly I’m sick of worrying about this. Will be 6 years HPV + for me this year when it no doubt comes back with the same result .

fedup078 · 24/09/2025 16:55

I also like you had lletz years ago and pregnancy made it flare up again for me. I’d had negative results before having a baby
