Same for me, twice. Both times treated successfully.

It's so so common

Had this when I was 21. At the colposcopy my cells were the highest grade before becoming cancerous. They were removed at the colposcopy. I had an issue one more time about 2 years later and clear smears ever since. I'm now 53. Try not to worry. It's very unlikely to have progressed further and they will most likely get rid of the bad cells at the colposcopy and give you a clean bill of health.

The words in your letter look scary, but you need to remember that cervical cancer is very slow to develop. If your last cervical smear was clear, then you are still a long way off anything that is truly nasty.

To break it down for you: Almost all cervical cancer cases are due to HPV infection. That's why they test for HPV first. There are different strands of HPV, some of which have a greater link with cancerous changes than others.

High grade dyskaryosis does not mean cancer - it still just means cellular changes that could in time become cancerous. The colposcopy will confirm, for sure, the stage of the changes, but I would be surprised if you're not offered removal. Depending on the procedure, this can be done under a local or general anaesthetic. After that you'll have some regular check-ups, but with any luck the treatment will be completely curative of the HPV and the dodgy cells.

I hope this is of some comfort. This is never the result we want from a cervical smear, but I'm really confident everything will be fine for you.

I've never had mine removed at a colposcopy but they've booked me in for a loop excision each time.

I’ve had a couple of colposcopy’s for the same thing and I was terrified BUT I was reassured and at ease the second I saw the staff who were in the room.

The anxiety is always worse than any part of it for me as I didn’t have any pain.

Hi,

just wanted to offer a hand hold. I had this last year, had colposcopy and they said it was CIN 1 low grade and they were happy to watch and wait and repeat smear in 1 year. So they don’t always get it right from the smear.

wishing u good luck. When is your colposcopy?

I have had my repeat smear and they found the same again, so once again I have a colposcopy booked under the 4 weeks wait. So a week Monday. I’m scared and convinced myself it’s gotten really bad. But reality is 1 year isn’t that long and these type of cells can take years to change and turn into pre-cancer, let alone cancer.

I’m 42, have three kids and a single parent. It all feels a lot doesn’t it x

I've just had mine, and it's come back negative. However, the nurse did say to me beforehand that it is very common to get a positive result, and most women may get 1 or 2 over their lifetime. Please do not worry. It doesn't mean that cancer has been detected at all
