What the hell just happened?

When I was 35, I was told I was too old for the pill. I had a hysteroscopy to rule out polyps and fibroids and everything looked clean as a whistle, but I was battling awful symptoms. Cramps in my thighs, back, tummy, and horribly scary blood loss. I was convinced to get a Mirena coil fitted a few years ago, and it was the worst pain I have ever experienced when they dilated my cervix. Giving birth was easier. The nurses were surprised that I was struggling so much when I’d given birth naturally, but I left the hospital feeling tearful, violated and angry.

After about a year my periods became non-existent, but they’ve recently come back with pain. I’m due to have the coil removed in a year and was okay with that (I only use it to control periods rather than contraception) but something pretty weird happened last night.

I passed something the size of a broad bean (similar shape) through my vagina when on the toilet. I was freaked out because it looked like a piece of raw chicken. What the hell is this? Should I see a doctor? I feel absolutely fine, but this is a new one on me.

Sounds like a decidual cast. I've no experience but have read about them on Mumsnet.

It'll be a decidual cast. Suggest you Google it.

Ask for cervical anaesthetic for your next coil fitting. It's a game-changer.

I am appalled that we aren't routinely offered it. I was screaming during my mirena fitting.

I'm almost certain it's a decidual cast- they're apparently extremely rare but I had them every single month until I had a baby, then they stopped. Although mine were much bigger (literally the entire lining in one go) I think they can come out in bits. I know a couple of other women who have had similar so I wonder if they're more common than people think and just underreported.

They're harmless, as far as I know, but can be extremely painful to pass 😖 hopefully it's just a one-off for you- the women I know who have had them didn't get them regularly, I think I was just unlucky!

That was the first thing I did, but a decidual cast sounds much bigger, more bloody and more painful than this. I’m not dead yet, so I’ll probably be okay! 🤣
