Teen DD - long period

I wasn't sure whether to put this in children's or women's health but went for women's health as it's about periods. My 13 year old daughter got her periods last September. Her cycle has been really short (around 15 days) except for this last one, which was 24 days... but she's now been bleeding for 16 days. Initially it was getting lighter around day 5-7 as you'd expect, stayed light and then over the last couple of days has got as heavy as her period usually is.

She feels fine and isn't presenting with any hormonal symptoms but I'm not sure what to do. It's the opposite of the experience I had with my early periods, when I had long breaks between periods and then they were horrifically painful. Am very glad she's not experiencing that at least!

Hi glowfrog

Im in no way a professional but didnt want to leave you unanswered

My dd15 had this when she first started, she had a bit of bellyache too but nothing horrific, it took about a year but they did start correcting themselves

when i went to the gp with her about it all they offered was the pill to help lvl them out which she didnt want

Her body is doing new things, while shes not suffering with it id say give it a chance to work itself out, if not there is stuff the docs can do, just depends what options you are both open to

Thanks for replying @DazedAndKerfuddled , much appreciated. It's my feeling as well, that it's part of the whole process of her body starting to do this. I wouldn't go anywhere near the pill etc unless it was starting to really impact her life. Taking the pill sorted out my painful and irregular periods so there's definitely a place for that IMO but we're not there for sure.

I'd also expect the GP to be short of options at this stage.

When I first started getting periods, and for years after I had a short cycle and long painful periods. They eventually settled. If it’s only been since last September I would give her longer to settle before worrying.

@KhakiShaker thank you
