Hi all, first time posting. I have had what I assumed was a suspected UTI for nearly 3 weeks. It started as a tightening pain in my pelvic area one night at bedtime, when I awoke the next day the tightening got worse and along came the feeling of needing to wee constantly but no burning. I thought oh it's a UTI I will try and flush it out myself but I ended up phoning the doctors 4 days later on the Thursday when the symptoms hadn't eased to be asked to bring in a water sample. Received a message later that day and another the next day to say everything on the test strip was negative. I phoned back in on the Monday as my symptoms were no better or worse, they made me an appointment for Wednesday and I was given nitrofurantoin for 3 days. I thought these were working but on the third day a few hours after waking up the pain I got in my right hand side was awful so bad I was shaking and the pressure feeling of needing to wee was the worse it's been, I phoned the doctors they got me a same day appointment with the advanced nurse who sent me to hospital with suspected kidney stones. Arrived at the hospital saw the doctor who said it's not kidney stones as by the time I saw him the pain had eased, ( I had been to the toilet 4 times before seeing him as I'd drunk loads of water ) he said most likely muscular pain and sent me on my way with 5 days of co-amoxiclav. Again thought I was getting better but yesterday evening I've had again the constant feeling that I need to wee with on and off pain in my right side. I thought I'm going to start weeing into a tub to see if I'm passing anything in my urine. I was sat and I suddenly had a sharp pain up my urethra I went for a wee and saw this actually pass in my stream. Now I'm thinking was the nurse right and it this kidney stones. I don't know anyone who has had them before so I've no one to ask.

Sorry for the long post. :)

That looks like a kidney stone. I would show it to the nurse practitioner at the surgery.

glittermittens · 20/02/2025 16:18

I am a long term sufferer of kidney stones. First attack when I was 19, I'm 50 now, last time was 4 years ago. That is definitely a kidney stone and all your symptoms are exactly what I get, but I also get lots of blood in my urine.

jennylamb1 · 20/02/2025 16:23

Did you get blood
In your urine?

jennylamb1 · 20/02/2025 16:24

Are you also feeling feverish and unwell.

jennylamb1 · 20/02/2025 16:34

Other thing is, did it feel like spasming in your urethra.

KimP85 · 20/02/2025 16:42

Thank you for the replies.

I have a doctors app booked for tomorrow afternoon so will show the doctor and hopefully will know one way or the other. No fever, the only symptoms I have are constant feeling of needing to wee, pain in my right side and some sharp pains up my urethra that come and go. No blood in my urine. It's funny because I said to my husband the other night it feels like I have a splinter or something stuck up my wee hole now I'm thinking was it a stone I'd possibly passed and not realised. I feel like it's just a guessing game at the minute.

That was the first symptom I got one night in bed. Every 20-30 seconds I was getting the feeling of something being squeezed and it would end with a sharp pain. This has now eased and I'm just left with the sharp pains coming and going.

The symptoms sound like stones and the stone looks very much like one. It's a bit odd to have no bleeding but might just be atypical.

beenwhereyouare · 20/02/2025 16:50

My sister used to pass kidney stones when young, she'd be in so much pain the police turned up before the Dr once as neighbours thought she was being abused,so I would expect you to have more pain if it was a kidney stone.

jennylamb1 · 20/02/2025 16:51

Interesting that you experienced spasming, I had a very similar thing but didn't manage to catch any stones. It was hideously painful when passing and then relieved.
It could be worth requesting a scan because like another poster said, they can reoccur.

I had one, the hospital tested my urine that showed blood but it was never actually visible.

Hi. Been to the doctors and she said it's a kidney stone. They are sending me for a scan of my kidneys, bladder and ureter. If that comes back normal and I still have symptoms they will take some swabs, send my urine off for a culture and refer to urology. She was quite surprised when I pulled the stone out as she said she's never had a patient catch one and bring it in before. Grin.

Great that you're getting a scan, I remember that I could not physically move away from the toilet because of the spasming and pain. It is really debilitating, so great to rule out any further stones, or to address them.

My worst day was last Friday. That day was awful, I was crying with the pain and I think I'm quite tolerant. The pain came out of nowhere so I think it scared me too. I didnt know what to do with myself, I couldn't sit down, I couldn't stand up. I was shaking with the pain. I do not want that pain again so I'm hoping I've passed all the stones that need to be passed. I still have pain in my side today but haven't had the awful needing to wee feeling.

I passed a kidney stone once and contrary to pp experience it was pretty painless, just a little scratchy, and (tmi!) it got caught on the toilet paper when wiping. I'd been quite feverish in the days prior and a dull ache in the kidney area. I did know I had stones and was awaiting an appointment to have them treated.

smallchange · 21/02/2025 18:31

I passed a stone at the doctor's while in the loo trying to produce a sample - doctor was also amazed!

I would have had no idea otherwise as although I'd started with cystitis symptoms that morning and by the time I ended up at out of hours had been vomiting in pain (yes, worse than labour), it resolved immediately after the stone passed.

My urine looked ok in the sample but the doctor said the test showed lots of blood. Luckily I've never had a reoccurrence (I now drink A LOT of water).

The stone was a 5mm spiky piece of hell which broke down to gravel when poked at by the doctor. She didn't bother with any testing - just sent me home with a cocodamol/naproxen prescription just in case.

jennylamb1 · 21/02/2025 19:30

Yes, I did find it as bad as childbirth too, just not knowing what to do with yourself. It did feel like the burning of cystitis but came on in minutes. Also had feverishness and had to stay in bed for almost a week.
It sounds like your GP is looking after you well OP and I wish you all the best, thank you for posting, because my GP couldn't conclusively tell me what was had happened and I think that you lot have done.

It's awful. Sounds like you have had a hard time with it. Here's hoping you never have to go through it again. Fingers crossed for us both. Thank you to you too for replying, you put my mind at ease a little yesterday. Take care. Smile
