Mirena coil for peri menopause?

Darlingbudofmay · 11/02/2025 09:17

Has anyone had the mirena coil fitted to help with peri symptoms? Has it worked?

I'm early 40's.

I recently went for my smear, where I saw a lovely GP and I ended up in tears at the symptoms I have been having in relation to my cycle.

She said I am displaying some peri-menopause symptoms and she believes the mirena coil would help alleviate some of these symptoms.

She has referred me to a gynaecologist to talk through the symptoms and look at getting this fitted.

I haven't been on any sort of pill/coil etc...for years. I really didn't want to go back on anything if I could help it as I couldn't be bothered with all the side effects again but if it helps I'm willing to try anything right now.

Did it help anyone with peri symptoms?

TIA

It was great for me , wish I had had it earlier. Periods just about stopped, still have one as part of HRT .

@Colette thanks for the reply. Oh that's good to hear, the GP actually said to me she believes every woman should have it fitted when they hit 40 to help with what's to come! Just interested to hear some real life stories! Thanks again.

Amazing for me, though why do you need to see a gynae? My GP fits them at our surgery. But you will need oestrogen too, just the progesterone is unlikely to help with peri symptoms.

OP I had mine fitted at 43 (I'm now 52), primarily for period control and contraception but the doctor recommended keeping it in for menopause.

I love it. No periods, no side effects. The first couple of weeks I had my first one in there was a dull pain, like period cramps. Once the coil embedded they went, and I didn't get any cramps etc when changing my coil. Genuinely, my only regret is not getting it much earlier.

I have had a pretty cruisy menopause compared to some of my friends. Very occasional hot flushes (like one a month) are about my only symptom. I can't guarantee I'm menopausal due to the no periods thing, but chances are pretty high... I won't take it out until I have to though!

Yes I had one fitted by the gynae v early 50s as I was struggling with the progesterone part of HRT. It's been fine.

To be honest the fitting was traumatic - I'd not had kids - I fainted and it was painful afterwards and I was off work for a day and a half., But since then it's been fine. When I get it taken out I'll have to have it done at the hospital at a clinic.

Thank you for all the replies.

I had my smear done privately so the GP who did it just referred me. Good to hear it's worked for you all, I'm now however going through other threads on it and can see it's not agreed with some! However I suppose that's like everything isn't it?

I think I will give it a go. Anything's better than feeling like this! 😩

I’m wondering this too! I’m only 42 but my sleep has gone to shit. I hope you find some relief OP.

Darlingbudofmay · 11/02/2025 10:10

@ButtCheeks me too, can't believe I'm here discussing menopause to be honest, I'm sure I was only 21 yesterday and sailing through periods like they didn't even exist 😂

What symptoms do you have if you dont mind me asking? I'll be 40 this year and feel horrible all the time but the gp just fobbes me if i mention peri.... and how did you know youre in peri? Or just gp said?

Darlingbudofmay · 12/02/2025 19:01

@Somerandomgirl hi, so symptoms I described to the doctor were I'm starting to get a varying length of cycle (between 24-28 days), brain fog/washed out zombie like feeling 3-4 days before the start of my period, slight vaginal dryness sometimes and some hot flushes.
It's the brain fog/mood that is absolutely draining me. I thought things were changing but it was the doctor who told me they were actually symptoms of peri.
