gastro (liver?) problems and v v v v worried

Hi there - I think I'm looking for reassurance or someone who is able to tell me that this doesn't have to be a life ending problem

I had upper right abdo pain for ages and because liver function tests came back fine - I found it hard to get GP help. In Sept a sympathetic GP suggested it could be gastritis and sent me for endoscopy - which found mild gastritis but the UR pain continued and I was referred for CT scan just before Christmas. I saw the results come back on the NHS app as "abnormal" and with a "lesion" on my liver. I had to wait until 7 Jan to talk to GP - by which time I was a mess and so worried. He wasn't worried at all and said it he would ask a Gastro consultant what they thought (the CT scan radiologist had recommended a US scan but I had to wait over 2 weeks for a gastro consultant to come back and say "have an US scan") The date came through for 11 Feb. In the mean time the pain has got worse and worse. Partic at night - and since yesterday I have also started having yellow poo too (which makes me think there's something horrifically wrong with my liver).
So my question is - I think I know I probably have something wrong (probably?) with my liver due to lesion - horrendous pain in upper right abdo - and yellow poo ... I am terrified that this is some kind of terminal thing - has anyone had anything similar or does anyone know if it could be something that I can get better from? Also should I go back to GP as things have got much worse or wait for Ultra sound scan on Tuesday? I am just petrified. Thanks for reading this far

With pain in that area the first thing I’d think of is gallstones. Or pancreatitis, both of which can be very painful. Also causes yellow/orange poo. Are you taking eg ibuprofen for it?

Liver problems don’t typically cause a lot of pain. I am not a doctor! (biology teacher with family history). A “lesion” on the liver could be nothing serious.

Please try not to worry. Call NHS helpline and see what they say.

You poor thing, you must be worried out of your mind. However, I know you are thinking the C word, but it is not necessarily that at all. As pp said, gallstones or a blocked bile duct can result in all the symptoms you mention. Have a look at the symptoms for both.

Wait for the ultrasound on Tuesday. That is the standard test for liver/associated problems. I'd say it will be an abdominal ultrasound, which will show all the organs in the abdominal cavity so you'll get a good going over. And it's painless and no MRI tunnel either!

I hope it all works out for you. Best of luck and maybe keep us posted.

Thank you so much for responding - I am trying to keep my mind focused on the less scary outcomes. I'm hoping I get to find out as soon after Tues as possible. I'll post an update :)

I have lesions on my liver, they are hemangiomas. Quite normal. Like birthmarks.
I had an u/s on my liver and shadows showed up, then had an MRI scan and that’s what they were.

Sounds more like gallstones. Poo can be pale and urine brown regardless of your water intake. If it becomes more painful see your GP again, because the pain can really ramp up if passing a stone. I've just had my gallbladder out and it's so much better. Buscopan works.

DO NOT TAKE IBUPROFEN. It is a big no no with abdo problems etc as it irritates the stomach lining. If u take brufen it will increase pain amd could potentially exacerbate your stomach issues.

its really hard to know what to take for pain relief - I'm worried about paracetamol (in case it's a liver problem) and worried about ibuprofen on the stomach. I had my gallbladder out about 6 years ago but I wasn't in this much consistent pain then. I have been googling whether you can have problems years later after gall bladder removal and was worried to see that it can make you more susceptible to liver disease - I'm not sure anyone told me that at the time. I remember asking the consultant about what I needed to do differently now and he said "nothing" he said it would just stop any of the problems I'd had before.

Hi , I am also suffering from pain in my upper right abdomen. Doctor thinks it may be my liver . I have had my gallbladder removed already . I have to wait 3 weeks just for a blood test . I have automatically went to the worst place in my head ( really not helpful lol ) . I wondered if you were any further forward ?

It was all ok :) Like the advice I got on here suggested ... it was a benign lesion. Before I got this information though I had to go for the ultrasound and wait for the results. During that tlme my symptoms got increasingly worse - I was in a ridiculous amount of pain and was so incredibly worried . I cried on the phone to the GP's receptionist after I had the US .. desperate to hear the results (I think I'd lost the plot a bit) As soon as the GP called with the results that the US clearly showed it was just a normal benign lesion - so insignificant it didn't need a biopsy or anything .. then the pain started to subside and all the other symptoms quietly went away over the following week. I still can't believe how much pain was caused by my own anxiety. It was unbelievable pain and horrendous bowel problems and yellow poo! But it must have been driven by my own worry. So my take away is .. try not to worry too much until you have all the information. I know it is unbelievably hard when we're sitting there on our own with pain and awful "what if" thoughts. Waiting 3 weeks for a blood test may suggest your GP hasn't fast tracked it - which may be a bit reassuring - maybe they're not unduly worried (?) (however that is a v long time to have to wait - I don't know if it's worth hassling them for an earlier appt to just help your own worry) I hope it starts to ease up a bit for you and you get some information soon x
