Should I get an Endometrial Ablation?

Heavy menses for 4 years, 4 years of low iron and extreme fatigue. However over the last year been on combined pill and has some light periods last summer only to heavy bleeding and flooding (incident in a supermarket!) again when on my period since November and now I feel fatigued again. I am fed up of the heavy periods take tranexmic acid but sometimes takes too long to kick in. I was all booked in for ablation and ready to go however I had a light period last week and now think long I may have turned a corner. Would you still have the ablation? Anyone had one? What was you experience? Particularly longer term?

I had one 4 years ago aged 49 and have never looked back. Still get a very very light period over two days and that's it. A game changer for me. Go for it

CaptainAwkward · 04/02/2025 17:28

Yeah, I’m soooo very glad I had mine about 7 years ago

Periods are now very light and only last two days compared with the heavy flooding and clots I had for years

Plus I got a nice sleep and rest

Showerflowers · 04/02/2025 17:31

Mine was the best thing I ever did

Showerflowers · 04/02/2025 17:32

I had mine without a general. Was uncomfortable but not too bad. Sore for a few days. Then wonderful very very light periods that lasted a day.

smallsilvercloud · 04/02/2025 17:36

Mine didn't work, only lasted 4 months until I started bleeding heavy again, however my womb lining was very thick.
It's worth a try, recovery is very quick.

Franberry500 · 04/02/2025 17:37

Agree with previous posters, it was life changing for me. Went from regular heavy flooding to just a barely noticeable light bleed. Had it done with no anaesthetic and whilst painful for a short time and a bit sore for a couple of days afterwards it was well worth it.

Thank you ladies for sharing your experiences.

Thought it might be worth mentioning I'm only 40, how old were you when you had it done?

I was your age

Nandia24 · 04/02/2025 18:10

I had it done when I was 43. It changed my life. No bleeding since.

Pistachioslice · 04/02/2025 18:58

All very positive experiences then l, that's hopeful

Mine failed. Within six months.

Pistachioslice · 04/02/2025 19:46

@SaturdayKitchenSally nightmare do you regret having the procedure?? Are your periods just as they were or worse?

I’m only mid 30s but I’m booked for one next month also. Been trying to search for positive stories. I just bleed on and off constantly, it’s onjy light, but I’ve been spotting for three weeks now. It’s getting irritating as this has been happening for almost 5 years and I’ve had a US, hysteroscopy and they’ve said there’s nothing wrong with me. Got a coil. It’s not really helped other than stopping flooding. I’ve given that a good chance as it’s been in two years. Gynae have said ablation is next step. Feels like I’m masking a deeper issue though.
When are you due to have yours? X

Pistachioslice · 04/02/2025 20:05

Tomorrow!!
I might as for them to delay it if possible and see how my next period is.
I'm anxious but I'm sick of the heavy bleeding and flooding

@Pistachioslice , absolutely I do, but don’t let that put you off, we are all individual. Post failure I had 10/10 pain that kept me awake at night for a week around ovulation, that was new.

I was also diagnosed with adenomyosis post failure (have got intramural fibroids).

My periods were no different, hideous flooding before, hideous flooding after failure.

RandomMess · 04/02/2025 20:20

I was 38 was life changing.

I was sterilised at the same time, post op was 3 week recovery which is unusual but absolutely worth it!!

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/02/2025 20:26

I was 40. It was life changing. From ridiculous flooding to the point I couldn’t leave the house for days at a time, and so anaemic I was ill, I got my life back - never had a period again. Fuckin awesome!

voubledision · 04/02/2025 21:56

@Pistachioslice I'll tell you my story

Friend 1 oldest of us all, had TA and it helped but only for a year.
Friend 2 tend years younger than friend 1, had hysterectomy and never looked back
I was given the choice by my consultant to try TA first and then if it failed, to go for hysterectomy. Consultant asked if I decided to have hysterectomy, did I want my cervix removing, I said I don't know what difference does it make, he said you'll never have to have a smear again if I remove your cervix.

Needless to say I decided to go with hysterectomy based on my friends experiences and never needed a smear again.

voubledision · 04/02/2025 21:58

@Pistachioslice please excuse typo errors! Hopefully you understand what I'm saying.

Normallynumb · 04/02/2025 22:29

Mine was genuinely life changing
My periods were torrential and despite ultra tampons backed up with night pads( during day) I still needed to change every hour or so
I was anaemic and on prescribed iron tablets and would've used a cup too, if I knew about them.. I'm 60
Had an ablation at 45. Not a drop of blood since
I had Novasure under light GA and was sat up with a coffee and sandwich an hour later!
Very light cramping the next day, and a slight burnt smell! and fine after that
I wouldn't hesitate if I were you.
You have to be sure you've completed your family first.

Pistachioslice · 05/02/2025 12:33

I'm waiting to speak to doctor I'm going to ask to delay it. If my last period was light and continues like that and If I can manage with combined pill I would rather do that. If I start flooding again I will have to have it done.

OP posts:
RandomMess · 05/02/2025 13:49

Be aware your years of taking the combined pill will come to an end.

Lillygolightly · 05/02/2025 14:20

I had it around last July, I did it without GA, procedure was painful (given gas and air) but it was over very quickly. I suffered something called cervical shock afterwards that made me poorly for a good few hours, but that’s rare and wouldn’t let it put you off. Mine seems to have been successful so far, no bleeding at all for around the first 6 months, I now sometimes get a little spotting that is easily handled with a panty liner.

After around 6/7 years of very heavy periods and flooding which had me constantly anaemic it’s a relief and very much worth it.

Mrsworried1 · 08/03/2025 20:19

Hi just coming back to update. Did you delay yours???

I had one yesterday. Wow was not expecting that level of pain when I woke up!! Had absolutely loads of pain relief like fentanyl and morphine.
I felt really sick and lightheaded for hours from the GA. I don’t know how people have these under a local anaesthetic!

I felt a little better this morning and I’m home
now but I’m so tired.

They did a biopsy now I just have to wait up to 6 weeks to find out if there was anything going on.

Dr came round straight after, said nothing in particular was found - although my womb was inflamed and bumpy- maybe from my mirena I had fitted at the time which they’ve replaced.

Trying not to worry?

Im taking codeine to help the pain which has helped.

Hope I get good results but they did say if combined with a coil the statistic is 1/20 will not stop bleeding, which obviously means 19 will.

Hope I’m not that 1 lol.

x
