Bum pain after colposcopy

Cappuccinosunday · 02/02/2025 12:39

I had a colposcopy, and during this a cervical punch biopsy was taken. The procedure really hurt me, and I experienced cramps throughout. I wanted it over, so I didn't say anything, because it is important, and having had babies, I have been through worse. I also didn't want to have to go back.

I am fine with smear tests, and had a previous hysteroscopy with biopsy, which was a bit painful in parts, but is wasn't uncomfortable through the entire procedure, so I am surprised that I found the colposcopy worse. The speculum this time hurt more, and felt like it was deeper, and pinching the sides. I could also really feel my cervix hurting during the procedure, like it was keep getting prodded to try to get the tissue. I was told it was hard to get the sample, and they had to try a longer forcep punch. I don't know why.

My vagina is sore, which is to be expected, until my cervix heals. The thing that surprised me is that my buttocks hurt, like pulled muscles. It also feels abit numb when I go to the toilet for a number 2.

Has anybody experienced this? Is this normal?

Just to clarify, it was a colposcopy I had, not a colonoscopy.

I felt messed about with too. I think I tensed so much I was really sore afterwards. I took paracetamol and rested. Hopefully after a day or two you’ll feel more yourself.

I had one last year and I felt like this for a couple of days, I think I was just so tense and was in there for awhile as they were trying to get biopsy & doing other checks so it was about 45 mins. It did go away after a few days though with rest.

God 45 minutes, you poor thing. They say a hysteroscopy is worse, but it was much better than I expected. They got the sample fine, and I had the after effects you would expect.

I went in thinking the colposcopy would be nothing, just a more advanced smear, it was awful. I had taken painkillers before it, but they didn't make a difference. The speculum just felt more uncomfortable; maybe because I was unconsciously tensing up. I must have been more relaxed for some reason during the last procedure. My cervix was hard which didn't help matters. It should have been lower because of where I was in my cycle, so I don't understand why a longer forcep punch was needed. I have no issues during smears, and they get the samples fine. I just don't know what went wrong.

Today I feel like I've been squatting for England. I haven't had numbness going to the toilet at the back, since having my dcs!

My bits just feel different, and like I've given birth to a small animal.😂 Dh thinks I'm nuts, but I suspect if a man went through this, he would be put to sleep!
I am dreading the results, and the thoughts of abnormal cells, and any more interference.

It isn’t a nice experience for sure! I also went into mine thinking it would be fine, I was only 5 months postpartum so I was very much thinking after a whole baby coming out of there I probably wouldn’t even feel it- I was wrong!😂

I’ve got my fingers crossed for your results!

For what it’s worth I have had to go back since then due to my results and for the follow up procedures I have always been offered gas & air which, although it didn’t ease the discomfort during, did make me much more relaxed so worth asking about that next time if you think it would help you! X

You did so well having that not long after having your baby. My youngest is 5, I have had 2 vaginal births and went in there nervous, but quite flippant about the whole thing; high pain threshold, no issues with other similar procedures. God was I wrong.

I hate when they ask you if you gave birth vaginally beforehand as well, it makes me feel that they think you can tolerate more invasion somehow, "large vagina incoming" look!😂
In reality I think after birth you can be more sensitive if anything, esp if there's any scar tissue.
I'm guessing the reason they ask is to explain any potential changes down there, but it makes me think that every time. 🫣

Sorry you have had to have follow up procedures; I hope all is okay for you now. It is horrible waiting for the results. They don't put biopsies on your nhs records either, so I cannot have a sneek peak of them before the letter/phonecall!

Thank you so much for the tip, I'll have to ask for something, because after this experience I just know I'll tense up again.

I felt exactly the same when they asked about vaginal birth, it feels like being asked if you have a big vagina doesn’t it😂😂

Definitely ask next time, I didn’t realise I could have asked for the gas & air the first time and if I’d known I would have asked for it once they started so absolutely if you have to go back then ask for it. Whatever keeps you most comfortable! X

Thank you, taken some painkillers. I must have over tensed; the things us women go through; it's barbaric. I wish they would change the speculum too, plastic is better than metal, but still not great.
