Hi everyone. I have a dermoid cyst removal op next week. ahhhh.. its 5x6x7 apparently when measured, but i know sometimes they can get it wrong. This is the first time (apart from having my boys) that ive been into hospital having an operation, i am so terrified, infact i will probably be like a baby when i go in next week and im 39.

I wondered if anyone could give me some positive stories. I have not been sick for 21 years and i hate it, i have been told the anesthetic and anti sickness will be fine and stop this happening??? and to try not have any pain relief. Im also scared if they find anything sinister in this cyst.

I just dont know how im going to get through the waiting to be called down, im such a nervous wreck about it all.

I haven't had exactly the same op but I had a total hysterectomy for a large uterine fibroid and an ovarian cyst. I really had very little pain because the painkiller regime was so good. I had no sickness whatsoever. It was nice to lie around being looked after for a few days too! I got over the op very fast.
Just think how glad you will be when the op is over. Before you know it, they'll be waking you up and telling you it's all over and it went fine. Good luck!

I had a dermoid removal last year. I was very well looked after. I was in hospital 2 nights and 3 days. 8 weeks no driving and 12 weeks full recovery. I'm in my 50s though so recovery probably took longer than someone younger. I had an infection and an allergic reaction to the pain killers and anti biotics so that slowed things down.

I didn't feel sick at all if that helps? Do you have help at home as the first week you will be very slow and need to rest. Was a bit of a shock not being able to lift the big milk carton out of the fridge!

I had a dermoid removed when I was 37, I left the hospital 4 hours after waking up because I was fine, I had been booked to stay overnight but preferred to get back to my little girl. So the operation was fine and nothing to worry about at all. The chances of there being anything sinister in the cyst are very low, so try not to worry.

Hi thanks for your reply 🙂
yes I will have some help at home for a few days. I just want to get it done and then get out of there lol.
oh no I’ve had a reaction to antibiotics aswell too.

yes I’m guessing the older you are, the recovery is a-bit longer. I think that will be the same for me. Good to know you never felt sick. x

Hii thanks for your reply. Wow 4 hours after, I’m hoping that’s me too…. It’s just the waiting to be called down that is terrifying me, and then when I wake up….
but good to know you had a good experience x

I've had a few ops OP including removing an ovary.

You will be fine. It is an amazing sleep you get with a GA, one min you are in a room with a mask on your face and the next you are awake.

I have been sick after an op but I don't remember it. Since then when I have had ops they give me an antiemetic.

Don't be surprised if you go down to theatre in disposable pants and wake up without them, they sometimes use a suppository pain killer.

Assuming you are having a laparoscopic procedure you will have 3 or 4 small cuts with stiches. These could be dissolving or you might need to have them taken out.

I get some really impressive bruising that is not painful.

If you are anxious they can give you something to calm you down.

After you have been back on the ward they will feed you (eventually) but I have learned it is not good food and can take ages so I pack myself a sandwich.

LoafofSellotape · 28/01/2025 10:59

Pack peppermint tea bags too as you can get deferred shoulder pain due to the gas and it helps loads.

Also plain biscuits like Rich tea are useful,no way I felt like a sandwich after my op.

Hey thanks for your message. I will definitely ask for something to calm me down as I’m abit all over the place about it.

I am praying the anti emec medication works because if I throw up I’ll have a panic attack. I don’t know why I react like that 😵‍💫.

I will be having 3/4 cuts too…. I was going to ask the hospital if I can have my own room but I guess that’s wishful thinking isn’t it……
I don’t think I’ll eat until I get home but I’m guessing they won’t let me go if I don’t x

Have you had your pre op assessment yet? Talk about how nervous you are and how you'd like a sedative. I had to wait 5 hours for my op and I wish I'd asked for something.

Ask about a private room,my hospital didn't have them but I'd have booked one if they had. As it happened there were only 3 of us in the ward the first night and the second night I was the only woman there so had the room to myself!

Remember the reason you don't eat before an op is to stop sickness. Also remind yourself that even if you are sick, you are in the right place - you won't have to deal with it and if you do have a panic attack then again, you are in hospital so will be looked after. Not like being at home and panicking as you don't know what to do.

I was dreading going in , last time I was in hospital was after a bad accident 18 years ago but honestly, if I'd had to stay in for a week I'd have happily done so.

You will feel SO much better when it's out and over and done with and you don't have to worry about it any more 😊

Hey yes I had a pre op assessment, they are aware I’ve had cbt for health anxiety and dread of sickness, so that has gone in my notes. Ok I think I’ll ask for the sedative 💯 thanks for that info.

I guess I’ll try my luck and ask for my own room, that will make me feel better.

That needs to be done now with regards to a private room, not on the day so get on it now and give the hospital a ring.

Brilliant, well done 👍

lovemycbf · 28/01/2025 19:39

I had a large ovarian cyst removed along with Fallopian tube and ovary and stayed overnight.
Keep up painkillers, it wasn't awful just sore and you must rest I tried to put laundry into the washing machine on day 3 and crippled myself

lovemycbf · 28/01/2025 19:41

Just to add mine was a teratoma cyst 10cm big

LightCameraBitchSmile · 28/01/2025 21:20

I had dermoids the same size taken out laproscopically. All form and was gone a few hours later.

Tell the anaesthesiologist that you're afraid of sickness and they will take care not to put you under too deep - that's what they do for me as the anaesthesia makes me sick.

Recovery was quick but no way would I have wanted no pain relief!

Hi thanks for reply… definitely will speak to the anaesthetist. I’m feeling better as they have put in my notes now I want a sedative straight away. So that should take my anxiety away for abit. And yea I’ll ask not to put me under too deep if possible ;))

UPDATE
Had my operation Tuesday, i had a side room and was able to have one sedative before hand. The anaesthetist came up with a plan for me, and i WASNT SICK yayyyyyyy..... i arrived at hospital at 7am and left 7pm the same day, i took it easy after and didnt rush. All i know about the op is it went well. I did not ask any other questions, i kinda wish i did, i am curious if the size was correct ect. The surgeon did say before hand that 99.5% of dermoids are benign. I dont have a follow up on my discharge letter. i have managed to take two plasters off but im struggling with the other two and my belly is still swollen.

If they had to remove anything else or the cyst looked suspicious would the surgeon have spoke to me? im guessing so....

Octaviathethird · 07/02/2025 15:35

That's brilliant that the op went well. They will likely write you a letter detailing what was removed etc. That might take a couple of weeks as they always send what they removed for testing. If they found anything problematic they would ask you to come in for an appointment so they could tell you face to face and explain the plan going forwards. As the surgeon told you, it's incredibly unlikely to be cancerous, so try to put that out of your mind for now - I know it tricky!

LoafofSellotape · 11/02/2025 00:09

It will be sent off for biopsy and testing and you will get a letter, mine took 4 weeks . Glad all went well 😊

Kas91 · 23/02/2025 16:14

Glad your op went well, I am waiting for the same operation, I have been on the waiting list since may last year, how long did you wait until you got your op date? Also, my surgeon said I'd need 2 weeks off work to recover but I didn't ask about driving after, is that also 2 weeks do you know? Hope you don't mind all the questions 😅
