Mirena IUD hasn’t stopped my periods!!

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to find people who have had similar experiences with the mirena coil.

I had it placed in Dec 2023, an excruciatingly painful experience that followed with bleeding and cramping for weeks afterwards.

The bleeding eventually regulated, and I now have 28 day cycles with light bleeding lasting about 10 days every month.

I have heard of so many women having the life of it with their IUDs - no pain, no bleeding.

Keep in mind I am currently 13 months post insertion and STILL having periods..

To be totally honest I am so fed up with it.

I am hoping that there is still a chance for the periods to stop in the 4 years I have left to go!

Can anyone share their experience with me? Has anyone bled with mirena for the full five years, or did it eventually stop along the way?

Thanks! :)

I'm 5 years in and still have periods, although MUCH lighter than before, so it's still worth it for me.

I didn't make it to 5 years, had it removed before the year was up I think. Had the same experience as you and wasn't willing to continue with it for that long!
Went back to depo injection instead, no periods and no pain!

I'm on my third, at the extended end of its life, and mine never stopped. I'd miss the odd one (annoying as I'd do a preg test) and they've been quite light, but also quite long, 8-10 days. Less so now I'm nearing menopause.

But no, they never stopped totally. And I was never very heavy in the past.

It didn't stop my periods or a pregnancy 😳
DS is almost 13 and was a COMPLETE SURPRISE!!

Hasn't stopped my periods, or PMT or cramps or ovulation pain. But they are much lighter.

20% still have periods apparently.

Lack of periods is a possible side effect of Mirena, but not a guarantee. Like PPs, it has made mine very, very light and much less painful but I do still get them. Normally more like spotting than real bleeding. They so last a few days longer and my cycle can be a bit irregular - I find using a tracker app helpful.

I'm on my second coil now, so about 7 years total. My period pains were debilitating before having the Mirena, it has changed my life. A year to settle down after having a new one fitted sounds about right, tbh.

In my 20s I was on the POP and that did stop my periods for a few years, but they did come back eventually for no reason. I think it's just the luck of the draw.

I'm about 18 months in and also have lighter but longer periods. They're no bother at all, 1 pair of period pants is fine for a day. It does feel like they come round frequently though as they can be 10 days long and sometimes just a 23 day cycle.

Mirenas provide excellent contraception and reduce menstrual bleeding significantly. They do not reliably stop periods although they often do .They also last up to 5 years with HRT, 8 years for contraception and depending on your age at insertion sometimes longer. What did you want from the device ? What would your option be?

cheezncrackers · 27/01/2025 10:46

It only stops the periods of approx. 1/3 of women. It didn't stop mine. I'm on my third one now.

blobby10 · 27/01/2025 10:55

My periods didn't stop but became much lighter and more manageable and it was heaven having them every 28 days rather than anywhere between 4 and 9 weeks. . Now I'm (hopefully) nearing menopause they are getting lighter and lighter although I've just had a week of blood with two days being heavy enough to warrant my mooncup! Rest of the time panty liners were fine.
I didn't have any pain or discomfort during insertion although I've got an inverted uterus (or something) so had to go to a hospital for the insertion rather than my GP.

Somerandomgirl · 27/01/2025 14:33

Hasnt stopped periods or ovulation or pain for me either... just lighter bleeding.... i was hoping aswell... have it for 8 months now...

WorriedMillie · 27/01/2025 14:38

I still bleed with mine, but much lighter (prior to having it, I ended up in hospital with haemorrhagic shock!)
I had cramping and spotting for a few months, then it settled, but my periods are now quite erratic, but mostly spotting, as think I’m getting close to menopause
