Supplements to balance hormones

Hello!

Does anyone take any supplements to balance hormones? I'm about to crash into perimenopause (if not there already) and I get quite a bit marketed to me on my social media algorithm.

I'm aware menopause / health and wellness is a huge industry full of charlatan products and don't want to waste money but if there is something natural that is science backed and genuinely helps I'd love to know.

Anyone got any experience with this?

TIA

Nothing with any evidence.

If you're symptomatic during perimenopause, then HRT can help (eg, night sweats). You don't have to wait until you have gone into menopause before you start. I didn't understand that myself. I'm perimenopausal and on very low dose of estrogen & body identical progesterone - it has really helped my symptoms.

"Balancing hormones" is one of Dr Jen Gunter's red flags for a charlatan jumping on the menopause supplement bandwagon - it's not a medically recognised term and there's no definition of what it means or what products might achieve it.

i was just wondering how you got on with this? I’m 49 and my periods are all over the place. I’m desperately looking for a supplement that can balance my hormones to help regulate my periods. I track my ovulation and this month the day after ovulation I started my period (even though I had a positive ovulation test for 2days). It’s really getting me down. The doctor has offered me a coil but I’ve had a coil twice over the years and on both times they made my periods so heavy. Any advice would be appreciated x

Body identical progesterone was the answer for me in perimenopause - rather than the coil, which has synthetic progestin. I take 100mg Utrogestan continuously throughout my cycle & my periods have pretty much stopped. Some months I get a light bleed and other times nothing. I have also been prescribed a low dose of estrogen (patch), but started on the Utrogestan alone. Bit of trial and error to find what works for you - added to sometimes difficult doctors.

This is stupidly late but please tell me more about this approach! Did you have insanely heavy periods? I do but I would love to try this rather than my current situation (coil which I'm not enjoying) but not sure if it would work for my periods? Did you find a practitioner who suggested this? Did you have the coil previously? Thanks in advance!

Insanely heavy periods, yes - got worse with perimenopause. I tried a coil & did not like it, gave me bad cramps for weeks on end & I had it removed. Tranexamic acid helped, but only did so much...
I had a private gynae prescribe the utrogestan continuously, though I understand its perhaps unusual in the peri stage to do that. Should add that I'm using the Utrogestan vaginally - which is a done thing, many women do use it that way without telling their drs, if they don't tolerate it well orally. Anyway, this is all working for me and I'm sticking with it! For the most part I don't have periods, no PMS either... There's a group called Totes Merry Peri on FB which you might find useful as a discussion forum. Good luck with it all.
