PCOS HELP

scottishmomma · 20/01/2025 18:35

Sorry for the desperate post but that's where I'm at.

I have known I have been pcos for 10+ years and have 2 beautiful children so I know I am lucky.
However I am looking for answers to help the symptoms of the chronic pains and cramps that come and go and also the mood swings. I have a very supportive husband but just don't think this should be a way of life that I, and my family, should just live with.

Have you done anything that helped?

Thanks

Hi,
Oil of evening Primrose might help. For pcos, cutting out sugar can help too, but is less easy. It helped me.
Good luck x

A few years I found going vegan worked wonders. I too was at wits end, covered in acne, dark hairs on my face, cramps from hell whenever my period would actually come. I did a deep dive on the internet, and someone did a video explaining that all the hormones from the pregnant cows, pigs, whatever, and all the stuff the give the animals disrupts our own hormones. I tried it out of desperation and within I’d say 4 months my periods were like clockwork, barely had to take painkillers and skin cleared up loads.

& I’m not saying this in a preachy way, I’m no longer vegan after having a baby, but I would definitely say my symptoms have returned again and I’ll be looking to cut it all back out soon.

Where and when do you get pain?. I ask this as pain is not normally associated with PCOS.

I don't know if it's linked to the PCOS but I had awful period cramps when I was in my teens/early 20s. Fortunately for me the right sorts of oral contraceptive (microgynon, Marvelon) alleviated most of my symptoms though obviously they don't suit everyone.

Calmhappyandhealthy · 20/01/2025 19:43

What are your hormone levels?

It's stabbing and twisting pains in my stomach, where I assume my ovaries are as well

I'm not sure. How would I find out?

Do you get these pains in the lead up to menses or during the period itself?. Something is causing this and I would seek medical advice. It hay be a good idea to keep a pain and symptoms diary particularly if you do not already do this.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 20/01/2025 20:05

A blood test can be done (day 2) to compare your LH levels against FSH which is useful for PCOS but no blood test will detect endometriosis if this is present.

SnailFail · 20/01/2025 20:13

PCOS gave me extra painful period cramps for a couple of days per month, but no pain at any other time. I've not heard of PCOS causing stabbing pains, so I would see the GP if it was me.

If it is just PCOS, to get it under control it's vital to maintain a healthy weight. A PCOS diet is helpful. Take inositol daily, it will take about three months to start working so persevere.

But get that pain checked out first.

Blood test

My understanding of PCOS is you don't have it unless you have high testosterone AND Multifollicular ovaries

Thank you for all your responses. I think I will try get to gp as I have just assumed it's the pcos I was diagnosed with at 20.
I just assumed gp wouldn't be very helpful as there is no cure or anything for it but perhaps something else is going on.
Thanks again

There's no cure for PCOS but there are ways to reduce the testosterone down to a normal level and reduce the numbers of follicles/cysts..... that doesn't involve medication

In fact medication for PCOS (as far as I know) masks the medical issues and creates more problems

Sometimes PCOS can ease off by itself although it can always return. Again, this is my understanding

I'd find out your testosterone levels and have an ultrasound to check your ovaries

Pain has not been a symptom of PCOS that I've known .....so you may not be struggling with PCOS atm

Diet and exercise.

Oioisavaloy27 · 21/01/2025 07:47

Do take evening primrose oil if you are on anti depressants.

MsMarch · 21/01/2025 07:47

Yes, agree with other posters that pain is not intrinsically an issue with pcos. Post children, the.pcos can change, yes, but this sounds like something you should investigate. I think you are still quite young so unlikely to be peri menopause symptoms but certainly for me, significantly increased pms has been a factor of peri, but also I noticed more pms post dc generally. To be honest though I chalked that up to more regular periods so more opportunities to notice the pms! 🤣

Have you tried Myo inositol? It's a vitamin for PCOS I was recommended by a specialist and really helped me. They're quite expensive, about £30 for 30 days worth but I found them worth it. I bought on Amazon.

I'd agree with this ^

I get mine from Lamberts vitamins just because I use Lamberts a lot and trust them

I've found that you might need to be smart and switch between myo-inositol and myo-inositol with d-chiro (I get this from Time vitamins - they also sell on Amazon)

You may have something else going on as pcos has lots of symptoms but the pain you're describing sounds different.

I have PCOS but I also have endometriosis which can cause abdominal cramps and pain. Have you considered you may have something else going on? Definitely see your gp who can arrange a scan. If you have an internal scan they will be able to see if you have cysts etc.

Endometriosis is usually only diagnosed after a laparoscopy but the dr should be able to work out if it's a possibility and send you to a gynae.
