Post orgasm headache

HorrorFan81 · 18/01/2025 11:54

Recently I've started getting excruciating head pain in the moments before, during and after an orgasm

First happened last Saturday and I honestly thought i was dying the pain was so intense. It died down after a few minutes and I googled and seems like this is a thing that happens to some people and is usually benign so decided just to leave it and see if it happens again. Have had 4 orgasms since and it's happened 3 times out of the 4. Not quite as painful as the first time but still bad, takes a minute or two of lying there deep breathing til the pain dies down

I have been unwell for the past month and my BP has been unusually high so not sure if it's related to that

Would you go see Dr? Or just hope it stops happening soon??

Are you holding your breath in the buildup to finishing?
If you've had really high BP could be linked. Don't be embarrassed to see a GP about it if it continues

girlsyearapart · 18/01/2025 11:59

Dh had this it’s called thunder Clap headache apparently
He went to the gp and they just went 🤷‍♀️
He had it like you several times over then it never happened agsin
weird / scary

Don't think I'm holding my breath but I'll try and check next time if I dare try 🙈

If it continues I will go. I can't deal with not being able to enjoy an orgasm!

Thunderclap sounds right, it literally slams into my head out of nowhere and it's horrible. And yes, scary 😨

I have this too. Lie down for a while after before getting up and drink water. That helps a lot.

beezlebubnicky · 18/01/2025 12:51

See the GP, as others have said - it sounds like a thunderclap sex headache, but could also be something more serious. I had these a couple of years ago for about 2-3 months and they then went away on their own, but the GP sent me straight for an MRI to check it wasn't something more serious. Especially with your history of high BP. I was referred to a neurologist but it had gone 3 months later when I saw him.

He told me that with this it's really common for it to just go away by itself, but you definitely need an MRI to rule out anything.

Thanks. I do have private health insurance so i could see about a neurology referral

I had this twice. I was really worried, like you, but it just went away and has not returned.

That's good to know, thanks

I might do a few more 'tests' and see if it keeps happening. It's horrible being scared to orgasm tho 😕

How is your blood pressure? Are you hydrated enough?

It's not that sexy but maybe take a break halfway through 😅 have some water, fresh air etc

So it has been higher than normal recently - was in hospital on 2nd Jan and it was 145/90 and at the Dr last Tuesday when it was 150/90. I have a home monitor now and it seems to be lower again (116/87 last night, 120/70 this morning)

Hydration is good, drink loads of water

So the pain doesn't come during sex itself, literally just during orgasm and can't really take a break during that bit 🙃

Ah then it'll be your BP! If you have tendencies for higher BP at rest you are probably just going too high when having sex. Your blood pressure will increase and dilate blood vessels in your head that lead to a headache. Worth mentioning to your GP (You can say that it happens when you're doing strenous exercise...)

I only mean to take a break to regulate your blood pressure, it might ease things a bit- definitely not ideal though!

SnowFrogJelly · 21/01/2025 10:11

I've had this but the pain wasn't as bad as you describe.. I do think it's quite common but see the doctor if you are still worried

So I've never had high BP before, it was just the first couple of weeks of Jan it seemed to be high (coinciding with illness). The Dr has me checking at home twice daily now and BP seems fairly normal. However I checked again today for the had pain, and before I even reached orgasm the pain was so bad I had to stop. So going to contact Dr tomorrow and see if any investigations can be advised.

Thanks, yeah I think I am going to - been going on a few weeks now and the pain really is awful and in quite a specific place

Yes I had this, luckily only the one time. I went to GP the following day and was sent to A and E to rule out a brain bleed. I do think you should go and see someone.

Wowzel · 21/01/2025 19:06

It is possible to have a subarrachnoid haemorrhage, see a doctor.

Thanks for all the advice. Ended up calling 111 last night as I was in alot of pain. They advised I go to A&E. BP was really high, bloods all ok, CT clear. Confirmed, as was suggested here, it's likely a coital headache and hopefully it will just go away on its own.

If it does continue I'll see about a private neurology referral in case there is anything to be done - i refuse to go without orgasms for months or years!
