Can I do something to stop periods in peri?

Mid-40s, massive slew of gynae issues since forever and crippling period pain every month.

Can I do something to just stop them, since they are serving no purpose? Thought Mirena, but google says it only stops periods for 20% of women. Was on mini-pill in 20s which did stop them, but didn't think it was advisable to take it for too long?

I'd have a hysterectomy if I thought it would be that simple, but it's not, is it...?

I’ve been on mini pill for years (not allowed combined pill because of thyroid) no periods, I’m nearly your age, docs happy for me to stay on it.

Interesting. Also have a fucked thyroid to consider.

Can it mess with menopause in any way do you know to take mini pill? Like if I ever wanted HRT?

I'm 45 and on the mini pill, just had a review, they're very happy for me to stay on it until I'm 50 with annual reviews.

About 3 very light periods per year and all menopause symptoms will go on 'behind the scenes' so to speak. Not sure what happens when I'm 50, the GP did say that I could come off off it and be virtually done, or I could come off it and into menopause, but I could take HRT then if required.

Obvs might not be the same for everybody but I'm lucky enough to have a simple medical history so happy to push the problem down the road for a bit longer!

everyone I know with a mirena either has no periods or very very light ones. I am very thankful for my third incarnation of mine, would recommend for heavy periods for sure

lavenderlou · 11/01/2025 21:57

Another one on the mini pill. I had a lot of spotting the first few months but no periods since, just a bit more spotting if I forget to take one.

Hurdlin · 11/01/2025 21:57

I had the mirena fitted for this reasons (and debilitating moods), it's worked really well for me. Took a few months for the periods to settle but they then stopped completely.

LadyMinerva · 11/01/2025 22:02

I had the mirena to try to calm my periods but it dislodged and fell out due to the heaviness and clots I'm 52 and they are still regular and predictable. Waiting for a hysterectomy now.

I'm early 50s and got the Mirena coil. The doctor said that at my age it would definitely stop my periods, but it hasn't so far.

DramaAlpaca · 11/01/2025 22:12

I got the Mirena at 46 and it stopped my periods completely. My second one is now working well for me as the progesterone component of HRT.

I had a novasure womb ablation
It's honestly the best thing I ever did for myself
Periods went from absolutely flooding for 7/10 days to hardly anything , not even needing more than a thin sanitary towel

ChocoChocoLatte · 11/01/2025 22:19

My HB levels dropped to 6 twice due to extreme bleeding and I needed 18 pints of blood.

Had an ablation. It's worked for a while but for some reason I've had two very heavy periods recently and absolutely wiped me out.

I'm not allowed any other intervention due to health issues Confused

CaptainAwkward · 12/01/2025 20:52

I had endometrial ablation and that changed my horrendous heavy periods to really light two day things

Chillilounger · 12/01/2025 21:06

The coil. You will have to put up with a lot of bleeding for anything from 3 months (to a year if really unlucky) but should then get rid almost completely.

Thanks. I’ve got an upcoming appointment but I’d like to be as informed as I can be.

I have suspected previous PID (well, they couldn’t find a cause for a load of other issues) and that seems to be a contraindication for Mirena. Will have to see.
