Hi just panicking as the oven gas has been left on all night without flame on gas mark seven.... don't know what to do. I've woke up with a headache and feeling sick but I don't know if it's just coincidence

Open all windows and doors to ventilate and don't turn on lights or appliances. I would call British Gas for advice and seek medical attention urgently.

Shezlong · 06/01/2025 09:52

Get out of the house and call the gas emergency line asap, it could explode. This is serious, get out! 111 999 0800 111 999

Shezlong · 06/01/2025 09:53

Number messed up, it's 0800 111 999

Plump82 · 06/01/2025 09:54

Open all your windows, back doors if possible. Don't use anything electrical or light a flame!!! And call your gas safety hotline, from outside your home.

Greysonsgrowler · 06/01/2025 09:54

My understanding is you can’t Sylvia Plath yourself with modern gas, they changed the formulation you can only blow yourself and the house up.

If worried about carbon monoxide poisoning I think that happens due to incorrectly burned and vented fumes of lit gas.

Open the windows and clear the house through while you do some googling just to check. Obviously don’t spark up a fag whilst you do.

DecayingRelic · 06/01/2025 09:55

gas does not leak out like that, appliances have a cut off so the gas is not coming out

Xiaoxiong · 06/01/2025 09:57

Was it just the knob that was turned, or could you actually hear/smell gas hissing out? Every stove/range/hob I've ever had, the gas doesn't actually start to flow until the knob is pressed in and then lit. If you have the knob turned and no flame, or if the flame goes out, there's a safety valve that shuts the gas off.

CrotchetyQuaver · 06/01/2025 09:58

I assume you've turned off the oven? I would just open all windows and doors for as long as it takes the smell to go and then a bit longer still just to be on the safe side and get outside to get some fresh air in your lungs. Es the headache is probably down to the fumes but I would expect it to pass

Whyherewego · 06/01/2025 09:58

Normally there's a safety mechanism which means if its not lit it will stop gas flowing

mam1998 · 06/01/2025 10:01

I honestly don't know if it will have stopped coming out as once I came in the kitchen I could smell gas but I turned it off asap so honestly didn't give a second to see if I could hear the hissing I have a three year old so I'm really panicking over it😭

The good news everyone is awake and fine! Air the room and I'm sure all will be OK

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 06/01/2025 10:04

A good reminder to get gas leak alarms!

HPandthelastwish · 06/01/2025 10:05

Air the room, don't use a naked flame, go out to the park for an hour or so.

I don't think the gas would have actually come out as mine only ever released gas when the knob was pushed in for the ignition.

AllPlayedOut · 06/01/2025 10:06

Not all appliances do. Some older ones don’t.

user3827 · 06/01/2025 10:06

You're ok. Call 111 if worried.

However, you might like to change your oven/stove to electric/induction. they're so much better anyhow and won't poison you. apparently gas stoves emit toxic gases even when they're off.

Rh0dedenr0n · 06/01/2025 10:08

Relax. I did this once. Just open every window then go outside for a few hours. You will all be fine

Edited

I think you might want to give some evidence of this.

custardpyjamas · 06/01/2025 10:14

Don't switch any light switches they can cause a spark. Ventilate the house.

custardpyjamas · 06/01/2025 10:17

You can smell gas even when there is very little, it's designed that way, so may not be much gas at all, as said it should have cut off.

Chonk · 06/01/2025 10:17

You need to ring the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999. Calls are free.

custardpyjamas · 06/01/2025 10:24

Gas is also heavier than air so it's unlikely much got upstairs. If you have a basement you might want to check for gas down there, don't switch on a light switch! If there is then you might want to get help, number given by poster above.

NellieJean · 06/01/2025 10:26

Contact British Gas not Mumsnet.

Are you and your Dc out of the house? That’s the main thing. Get out and make sure you’re safe. Call the gas line for help.

nervousnellylikesjaffacakes · 06/01/2025 10:40

I did this more than once. My pregnant belly kept hitting the gas button. Blamed my poor husband for being careless and almost killing is until I felt myself do it one night. Air the place out thoroughly and it will be fine.

Only recent ones and it wasn’t grandfathered in so anyone with a gas appliance over a certain age won’t have a cut off. Ask me how I know……

Also, previous advice is right, ventilate, call the gas emergency line and leave the building for a few hours.
