Hysteroscopy Advice

adviceplease1238 · 05/01/2025 19:49

I'm booked in to have a hysteroscopy on Thursday - I was offered GA and turned it down because I'm quite anxious about GA, but I've since read some horror stories and now I'm wondering if that was a mistake.

Does anyone have any advice please?

For context, I'm 33YO, the procedure will be done privately (not sure if that makes a difference?) and I'm likely to be on my period for it. They will be taking a biopsy as well.

Any advice..? Current plan is to have local anaesthetic to numb the cervix...

Should add I do have health anxiety (hence being concerned about GA)

It was absolutely fine! I was asleep before I knew it, and awake before I knew it! Feel fine now, just waiting for tea and toast which I'm quite excited about!

@JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn you are right, I feel a bit silly for being so worked up about it all now!

Thank you to each and every one of you who shared your experiences, it really did help weigh up what to do ♥️

I had this done no GA . Took some cocodamol before . It wasn't nice but no worse than a bad period or cramps with an upset tummy for me .

If i was to have another i wouldn't opt for a GA if that helps .

Just seen you have had your procedure - glad it all went well !

I had a hysteroscopy last month with polyp removal, biopsy and mirena fitted. I opted for GA because of historical sexual violence trauma and was so glad I did. It was an incredibly smooth and easy process and the anaesthetist really put my mind at rest re the GA and any risk.

i had one. GA wasn’t offered. It’s not pleasant, I was expecting it to be awful as I stupidly looked at some experiences on you tube. It was a couple of minutes of pain, very similar to contractions. It lasted less than 5 mins. I was able to walk home (40 mins) on one of the hottest days of the year, although I wouldn’t recommend this. Very little blood lost. There is actually a petition out there to get this procedure done in GA for everyone.

What would be the point of that (as opposed to GA being an option) when it's relatively painless for some women?

Having now had three (including an aborted one) I'm starting to suspect that it depends a lot on the person who carries it out. The last one I had was almost painless and I didn't have a local (or even a Paracetamol). Practically no recovery time.

The previous one was with a GA so obviously painless while they carried it out, but a much bigger deal in terms of how long I had to be in the hospital and subsequent recovery. Basically took up over 24 hours rather than about an hour.
