9 weeks of bleeding

My periods started becoming irregular about 6/8 months ago.
However, I have been bleeding for 8 weeks now. Enough to need a small pad. My GP said she thinks I have errotions and polyps. She said a scan will be about 8-10 weeks to confirm.
The GP wasn't very helpful. Is it safe to be bleeding for this long? I'm assuming sex is out of the question, but she didn't say anything about it.
Any advice or help?

How old are you? And the GP obviously thinks it’s ok to leave you bleeding.

I'm assuming you're under 55, in which case I don't think you meet the criteria for 2WW referral for endometrial cancer, of which bleeding is a sign, although it's more likely to be something else, e.g. a polyp as a the GP said. I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer under 55, I had a very watery bloody discharge, which seems common with that. I was bleeding constantly for about eight months before I had my hysterectomy, my iron was low as a result, so you might want to watch that. Endometrial cancer isn't that common though, I was just unlucky. Hope you get it sorted!

I had heavy, clotty bleeding for weeks at 48. I also had the watery discharge. Turned out I also had endometrial cancer with a womb full of polyps too. I’m nearly 5 years post diagnosis now and am fine. Caught early, endometrial cancer is very treatable. It turned out I have something called Lynch Syndrome which can cause cancer in younger people.

So heading into peri menopause territory.

smallsilvercloud · 06/01/2025 00:46

Have a similar problem, non stop bleeding, I've had a scan which didn't show much, then a hysteroscopy and biopsy which were all clear, bloods tests clear so I have no idea other than it's hormonal, I'm same age as you, the mini pill stops it for a while, I don't like the idea of the coil so I went for an ablation which burns out the womb lining, and that hasn't worked so I'll wait and see what the consultant says next.

Try not to worry as I had this and the doctor said it's peri menopause. I went onto hrt (for different reasons) and everything is regular as clockwork again.
Best to be checked out by a GP to be on the safe side though, but she said this is common in peri menopause due to oestrogen dropping.

@smallsilvercloud hope you don’t mind me
asking, how old are you? And how long since ablation. I’ve been having the same. Booked in for an ablation in a few months x

smallsilvercloud · 27/01/2025 18:05

@Mrsworried1 I'm 44, I had another scan done this week and my womb lining has grown back already after only 4 months of having the ablation, and the bleeding is worse this time. I think a hysterectomy is the only way forward now, however I don't regret trying first.

Mrsworried1 · 27/01/2025 18:09

@smallsilvercloud im mid 30s, been spotting between periods and just excessively for 5 years now. Fed up. Coil has helped the volume of blood, but I spot/cramp half the month. Dont really want an ablation but it’s my only option now. I don’t have sex it’s too painful. They won’t check my cervix with a colposcopy because they say my smears are fine. Fed up x

smallsilvercloud · 27/01/2025 18:20

@Mrsworried1 didn't realise you'd be so young for this, sorry to hear that and it's been along time for you, I've had this issue 7 months so far and can't wait for a hysterectomy, it will be a relief from this constant bleeding, even the pill doesn't work that well. I hope the ablation works for you.
