How long for endometrial biopsy results?

Hi all. I ended up in hospital last week for a very large abnormal vaginal bleed - lost a lot of blood. Scan showed thickened endometrium and a biopsy was taken. Just wondered how long you guys waited for results if you've had this before?

Would they be able to see cancer on an ultrasound alone?

The wait is so nerve wracking.

My sister's on the NHS was 6 weeks but I've heard it can be more like 3-4 at times. I am waiting for my results currently after a difficult few months but went private and am hoping to have them just after New Year.
Wishing you the very best of luck.

Pipelle biopsy? Be warned, mine didn't pick up enough cells to be sure and I had to have a hysteroscopy. I think the (non) result was about a month tho.

@mumwithallthebooks thank you. Wishing you the best with your results also.

@margegunderson oh gosh, how frustrating is that. Hopefully they've got enough cells as that does not sound pleasant

Just over a week for mine.

@Openup oh wow that was quick. May I ask what your results were please?

I waited 3 weeks for mine, was told cancer was present and was booked for a full hysterectomy 2 weeks later

yellowbrickroad27 · 30/12/2024 10:13

@ramonaquimby sorry to hear that. How are you doing now? Did they say they suspected cancer before? I was told my womb was thickened but did not really know what that meant until I came home to google. It was all a bit of a blur at hospital.

Hope you're okay ❤️

Yes the biopsy confirmed cancer. At a scan (after I had unexplained bleeding) my endometrium was thicker than average and polyps were seen. I've needed follow on radiotherapy post surgery as the cancer had spread. Finished that now and waiting for results. Was a shitty few months but feel ok now.

yellowbrickroad27 · 30/12/2024 12:06

@ramonaquimby how stressful. Glad you're feeling ok and that it was caught. Are you post or pre menopause?

thank you. I'm post menopausal, I'd been on HRT for about 3 years

ramonaquimby · 30/12/2024 13:01

sorry, should have also said I hope it's good news for you. Waiting is awful, I stopped googling after a while and haven't since before my initial diagnosis, can go down dark holes and everything is so individual

SierraSapphire · 30/12/2024 13:09

10 days for mine, it was cancer. Caught early, as mostly they are, often a hysterectomy is all that's needed and it has a low rate of recurrence. I was unlucky and mine had spread to my ovaries, which is unusual. Impressed by your quick hysterectomy @ramonaquimby - mine was eight weeks, it took 6 months from me going to the GP with symptoms to hysterectomy due to mistakes and too many bank holidays 🙄. I seem fine now though! The ultrasound can't confirm cancer, you do need the biopsy for that. Good luck, thickened endometrium can be due to various other things.

yellowbrickroad27 · 30/12/2024 13:52

Thank you all.

I guess I'm worried because I'm pre-menopausal and the consultant originally said cancer would be extremely rare and biopsy probably not needed. But as soon as he did the scan, he said 'actually womb is thickened and I will be taking a biopsy' which makes me think he saw something :(

Might try and call for results.

@SierraSapphire so sorry it took so long to get your diagnosis / treatment. That must have been very frustrating. Glad to hear you are okay now. Xx

Someone we know had just been diagnosed. She had the biopsy end Nov and results last week .

mumwithallthebooks · 30/12/2024 19:23

@yellowbrickroad27 I am pre-menstrual too. I think it is natural to worry but everything I have read suggests the odds are very much in our favour. Through this process, they've found endo and adeno and I am hoping that explains irregularities but until those biopsy results are in, you can't relax. Thank you to all the other posters who've shared their stories.

@mumwithallthebooks hoping you get reassuring news soon :-) x

I had endometrial cancer. All very easily treated.
