Recurring boils

Poppyseeds79 · 23/12/2024 03:45

For the past few years I keep getting boils in the same places on my inner thighs. They're normally quite deep and painful to touch. Seem to crop up more when my period is due and then just heal on their own without any interference from myself.

Obviously I could make a GP appointment, but they're hard to get at my surgery and once the boils clear up I tend to forget about it until the next time. It's not every month but it's fairly frequent. Anyone else get this?

I think you need to make that appointment as this can be caused by things like diabetes.

I would add to the above - I was plagued with them in the same place, and I had type 2 diabetes. I also stopped using a razor on my upper legs and started using hair removal cream - that put a stop to the ingrowing hairs.

See your GP.
Ask for swabs and ask them to screen for Panton Valentine Leukocidin ( lateral flow tested in lab).
It is commonly missed, and is a type of MRSA but often doesn't respond to normal antibiotics that are prescribed, like Flucloxicillin, Co-Amoxiclax. Microbiology should advise on treatment if its picked up.

This sounds like hidradenitis suppurativa to me. I’ve got it - I’ve had it misdiagnosed many times over the years. GPs don’t seem to know much about it. Flaring up around the time of your period is characteristic of it.

I used to get those a lot. Are you a smoker at all? Mine stopped when I gave up smoking.

I have hidradenitis and it sounds similar
Groin and one armpit for me and very occasionally my face

Is it an area where you doing hair removal? If so, leave it alone for a while and see if things improve.

Thank you for the responses. I had also wondered if it was HS or Diabetes related, mostly been putting it down to ingrown hairs though. I'm mid 40s, and have a high BMI so it could be Diabetes Type 2 🤔. I'd say no other symptoms but I've been working a cover job this year with a fairly long commute, so tiredness and whatnot gets put down to that by myself. I'll try to get a GP appointment after the New Year.

I did do one of those over 40's medical MOTs last year, but things could have changed since then I guess.
