Pelvic MRI - what to expect

SandandSky · 10/12/2024 18:11

I am going for a MRI of pelvis next week for endometriosis investigations and I am feeling so nervous!

The clinic haven’t been very forthcoming with information (they have been pretty poor from start to finish but unfortunately my hospital options are limited/none)

wondering if anyone can help me out with what to expect/top tips etc - just so I can calm the nerves a bit

I’ve had one - it was for my spine, lumbar. The MRI is very noisy and your nose is almost against the inside of the scanner so it’s not great for claustrophobic types. That said, they will usually give you a pre med for nerves if you tell them before hand.

you can wear earplugs too. It’s not painful and all over in about 20 mins. I slept through the last one.

I had a pelvic mri recently and it was a piece of cake. I’ve only had head ones previously and they put me in head first. For the pelvic one I went in feet first so my head was poking out of the ‘tunnel’ a bit, so it wasn’t claustrophobic.

It took about 30 minutes for three scans. You have to keep perfectly still but you can have a wriggle between each scan, and get yourself comfortable. It’s very noisy. Lots of very loud banging and whirring noises. They’ll offer you headphones which helps. You have to wear a hospital gown and remove all your jewellery.

It will be fine and absolutely nothing to worry about. The worst part was that I was a bit chilly.

I’ve had 5 MRIs now I think it is.

it’s noisy. They’ll give you headphones but they’re unlikely to fit well!

youll be in head first usually but it’s well lit. I’ve always kept my eyes resolutely closed but in my last one I opened them and realised its not as bad as I thought. I nearly fell asleep in that one strangely, I was quite cosy I guess!

Itll take around 20 minutes to complete.

I had an MRI recently too. You only have to wear a gown if your clothes contain any metal fastenings eg. Zips, buckles etc. So if you wear things without any metal, you can stay dressed and warm 😊
