Hello,

Does anybody take Norethisterone long term, and have you had any side effects?

Gynaecologist has just started me on this for very heavy and erratic bleeding. Waiting for an ultrasound. Looking online it says short term use but he told me to keep taking it for a while?

I've been on the noriday contraceptive pill for nearly ten years now with no side effects.

I was on this for a few weeks while they were investigating bleeding, in my situation it was for prolonged bleeding that wasn't stopping, it worked for about 2 weeks then got break through bleeding, there are better longer term solutions such as contraception or surgery in some cases. It doesn't seem strong enough medication to work long term.

I took it for about 6 months during cancer treatment. I still got a few periods, and it made me a bit hormonal. But I had a lot of other medical stuff going on so it's hard to say if that would be the same for anyone else

@smallsilvercloud what was the cause of your bleeding if you don’t mind me asking please?

@walkingdead893 they never found out the cause, despite blood tests and biopsy, I had a ablation which has now stopped it, fortunately I was done having children.

@smallsilvercloud ah interesting. I’m waiting for my ultrasound and biopsy but getting anxious! Bloods were normal thankfully. Luckily had my children too incase they need to do anything.

@Bertielong3 bless you, it’s horribly concerning isn’t it? I ended up in a&e last week as I was just soaking through every tampon every hour! This has controlled the bleeding but I want answers. They didn’t see overly concerned and did no tests there. Just have to wait :(

I was on this around 15 years ago following erratic bleeding. The consultant said it would kickstart my regular cycle which it did very effectively after 3 months use.

I had really awful low mood with it though. By month three I really didn’t feel like myself. It was bad enough that several friends were concerned enough to talk to me about it.

Everything went back to normal as soon as I came off it though so it’s worth a try if your doctor thinks it will help.

walkingdead893 · 08/12/2024 22:19

@bigdecisionstomake oh no, sorry to hear it made you feel low. I’m on sertraline so I’m hoping that won’t happen. Great to hear it regulated things for you though, that’s a great outcome and gives me hope!!
