Overproduction of sebum in peri-anyone else had this?

I've been having various peri symptoms for the last few years (I'm 42), managed with diet exercise and mag glycinate.
The latest one is super greasy skin and scalp..saw a dermatologist who said I may have sebhorreic dermatitis but not much evidence, I'm just producing loads of sebum which is so uncomfortable.
He said maybe to try isotretinoin if capisan shampoo doesn't work or the combined pill.
I'm so so uncomfortable with a greasy film on my hair and eyelashes and my skin is so oily. Anyone else have this and find anything that worked? Ketaconozole, nizoral, head and shoulders have not sorted my hair at all!

Aveeno apple cider vinegar shampoo? Those other shampoos did nothing for me aswell

How often do you wash your hair? When I was teenager I had very bad seborrheic eczema on my scalp and my dermatologist told me to use nizoral twice a week and ordinary shampoo in-between but to wash my hair everyday. 30 years later I still wash my hair every day with head and shoulders and have no problems. When I have for illness reasons or something else not washed my hair for a couple of days my scalp gets very itchy and flakey.

Yes I had this. Hideous. I found shampoo by the Ordinary really stopped it. I also got HRT which made a difference

H&S stops the itch but not the grease. Nizoral doesn't do anything except ruin my hair and make my scalp itch more. It's such a pain.

I've been greasy since puberty and am now in peri and still greasy. I recommend washing your hair and using dry shampoo either straight away after or as soon as you see the first oiliness. For facial skin I use a powder called Zero Sebum which you can get on Amazon. Also blotting sheets, and powder foundation instead of liquid.
The only things that ever worked properly for me were the pill and isotretinoin. I took a very low dose of isotretinoin for a year but it was my third time taking it and I had some bad side effects. It's not great for overall health.

Here we are; I rate it. I also wash my eyelids to prevent blepharitis which I developed during peri given excess sebum which can lead to excess yeast on your skin, creating itchy gritty eyes.

Thank you.
I think I may try the pill if the doc allows it before the isotretinoin, already have low moods so don't want to aggravate anything like that potentially

I recommend a wheat bag like this. It has made a big difference to me and the blepharitis is now under control. 30 seconds in the microwave.

@bombastix
The best bags tends to bring me out in acne around my eyes. Is this it now? I'll just be a walking grease blob?
The shampoo recommended by the dermatologist has done naff all so I've ordered the ordinary one

I hope not! I found that my skin calmed down a lot. But I have to clean daily. Try the bag, it’s really helped me

I have seborroeic dermatitis to my lower scalp. I have dry hair, it's never been greasy but the itching is driving me mad.

I was prescribed Capasal which has made no difference and also more recently Nizoral, this hasn't made a difference either.

I've rubbed some prescribed hydrocortisone the dr gave me which calmed it down but it's not ideal as it doesn't get to the scalp enough.

I'm so tempted to ask my hairdresser to cut my hair really short (I have a short bob) so the longer hair would cover it.

I'm 55 and post menopausal.

BG2015 · 03/12/2024 19:24

I've just ordered some of the Ordinary shampoo - it was on offer plus free shipping.

I'll try anything.

Same here with capasal. It gets rid of the grease but my hair is on the verge of breaking off as it's so damaged from all these medical shampoos. I'm going to get my hair cut off asap. It just feels horrible and I've always had such dry hair in the past.
Still waiting for the ordinary shampoo. Delay in shipment.
