Hi ,4 weeks today I am booked in for a hysterectomy, with ovaries removal due to a large ovarian cyst and other issues. Has anyone any recommendations of pre or post op advice? Thanks 😀

I had a hysterectomy on 18th Oct. Started a thread in general health for support but with limited responses. Happy to answer any questions. I would suggest avoiding reddit as it is full of horror stories of what can go wrong!

Join the hysterectomy sisters FB page. Loads of info and support.

Would advise getting a grabbing stick to pick things up, you'd be surprised how much you drop! Also you have to be prepared to let standards drop around the house. I live alone with my teenage son who has been brilliant but he can't do everything. My partner is here once or twice a week and helps changing the bed and cat litter tray etc. I can't bend so have perfected the art of dropping cat food from a height into the bowl!
Also suggest putting things you will need at a reasonable height in the kitchen etc. And rest as much as you need to, healing is tiring and you only get one chance to do it right.

Hello. Just updating after my operation on Tuesday. Back home, sore but okay and had a decent sleep for the first time! In terms of practical advice, things I can add are a power bank to charge up your phone a couple of times whilst in and definitely peppermint or fennel tea for the gas. I was given movicol and senna from the day after operation and have been sent home with three weeks supply - hoping to see some results today! If you want to DM me Op, more than happy to chat whilst everything is fresh in mind. Otherwise hope it all goes smoothly for you.

I hope your recovery continues well. Did you have your cervix removed? This is the thing that has caused me most stress! Also did you get any guidance about baths? I was told 2 weeks but the guidance seems v varied and on reddit people quote 8 -12 weeks, I'm not sure I can wait that long!

Had a total, so yes cervix gone too. Quite happy about that, as no more smears needed! I was told to wait at least couple of weeks for baths too. I’d take the advice of a health professional over Reddit any day.

Prepare for a slow but steady recovery. Slow slow slow!!!

Don't overdo it.

Take your time. Get your HRT in place. Download a pelvic floor APP.

I had a hysterectomy, followed all the advice, started very light training within 6 months and now I'm weightlifting 2 years later. Little by little... I'm really strong now! Good luck

Hope all went well. It’s the reality of major operations that complications can happen. It happened to me and I had sepsis after my surgery . Two hospital admissions and I was very very poorly.
Keep well, follow guidance and follow your own body.
I was advised to take multi vitamins but then I am
also under a hospital dietician as well as my consultant regularly checking in.
Good luck and best of wishes in your recovery ❤️‍🩹

Hi isletsoflangerhans. I just wondered how your recovery is going now? My operation is on Friday 🤪

I’m doing okay, thanks! It’ll be three weeks since my op on Tuesday and overall have been feeling a little bit better each day (had a couple of days where I felt like I was going backwards, but that’s the norm). I’m just about off the paracetamol now (down to 2 a day) and doing a 5-10 min walk each day. I feel lucky that I’ve had no complications so far, but I’ve been following all the advice to the book, including the excellent suggestions on here. Going to ring GP about starting HRT this week, as I had everything out and went into menopause. To be honest, I was expecting a rougher ride in that department, but it’s mainly been the odd hot flush and headaches 🤞

Wishing you all the very best on Friday 😊

Good luck with the op. I am 8wpo now and started back at work today. Still nowhere near back to normal but getting there. May sure you take the time you need to relax and heal x

CaptainRedbeardandbigbadbarry · 16/12/2024 20:19

It takes bloody ages. My sympathies with all those having gone through it or about to.
I was admitted for a second time with sepsis . Still not right at all.
Just about had enough to be honest.

Hi I just wanted to update the thread. They were only able to remove the cyst, and an ovary due to severe endometriosis. I have a follow up booked for 6 weeks. So recovery has been a lot easier than expected x

Good to hear you are recovering easily and hope the follow-up goes well 🤞
