Looking for info on colonoscopy following smear...

Good evening 😊
I've had a smear recently (very painful) and I've had an urgent referral for a colposcopy - which is next Friday.
I'm wondering if anyone has had one before just so I know what to expect...?

I was told I had "abnormal results"
Thanks so much

Was it colonoscopy (looking at your colon, ie the lower part of your digestive system) or a colposcopy (looking at the womb)?

If the latter, you may want to amend your thread title as the two are very different!

Lol thanks for that. My brain......

I'm assuming you mean a colposcopy ? I had one and actually didn't feel a thing it's more just mortifying sitting in a chair legs up in the air while they get a camera up there and take the sample

It autocorrects on my phone... might not have been your brain!
I've had one, it was uncomfortable but OK. I felt a bit faint after. But came back clear.

I have had two colposcopy appointments where biopsies were taken.

It’s basically a more in-depth look at your cervix. They may use a solution to highlight any abnormal areas on your cervix and take a biopsy.

I found both times painless and the staff were brilliant at reassuring me and made me feel at ease.

Good luck.

I had one recently following a smear, it’s kind of like a smear but takes a little bit longer, not my my favourite thing to have done but needs must and the doctor & nurses were really lovely. Try not to worry, it’s over in no time and they were able to give me the results straight away.

I had a colposcopy and biopsies taken back in February. I too was very nervous and posted here for advice. I needn't have worried....it was absolutely fine for me, no more uncomfortable than a smear, but it just took a little longer. Honestly, you will be fine. The nurses are lovely, too, and are good at keeping you distracted during x

I had a colposcopy back in August after low-grade abnormal cells were found following a smear. It was slightly uncomfortable but the nurses were lovely, reassuring and chatted to me throughout. I didn't need a biopsy but do have to go back for a repeat smear next year instead of being able to wait 3 years like I normally would.

Hope it goes smoothly for you and try not to worry.

I've had paperwork through today and I'm to have a LLETZ procedure as well as they found HPV and high grade changes. Hasn't helped my anxiety levels. Has anyone had a LLETZ as well?

Thanks xxx

I had LLETZ following a biospy at the colposcopy. It was very similar to the colposcopy. I didn't feel any pain but it felt slightly warm which they'd told me to expect. The recovery was fine afterwards but I did get an infection which needed antibiotics. xxx

OchAyeTheN00 · 20/11/2024 15:56

Yes I’ve had lletz. They start by putting your legs in stirrups and having a look with the camera. They then put a solution over the cervix which shows the abnormal areas more clearly. When this dribbles out of you it can sting your skin slightly, especially if you’ve just shaved!

they then use local anaesthetic in all 4 clock positions on your cervix and then they use a heated tool to cut the tissue out that they believe the abnormality is in with a nice wide margin to make sure they’ve got it all. Won’t feel this but the anaesthetic can feel a bit pinchy.

you may bleed lightly / cramp after the procedure for a day or two.

thestorm · 20/11/2024 16:07

I had colposcopy and lletz recently for the same reason as you. The nurses were lovely, reassuring before during and after. Because they were doing the lletz at the same time they used local anaesthetic for the whole lot and I didn’t feel a thing. It was a little undignified but because the nurses were so nice it was more than fine.
I had a little pain for a couple if days after and followed the instruction to take it easy with no heavy lifting/pushing/pulling for 4 weeks after to the letter, also avoided baths etc for a couple of weeks. With the activity side of things they basically advised as don’t do any of those things that require using more than one hand. As I have a physical job that was challenging but I simply made sure my team were aware I had an operation and had to take it easy to avoid complications.
When my results came back it said they found no cancerous cells and they were confident they had removed everything necessary.
As an aside, I also had an intensely painful smear test in the past which has put me off having them since, causing me to delay for years sometimes. After the last one I am glad I finally got it so the results could be followed up on.

I had a colposcopy and the biopsy a year ago. It was a bit uncomfortable but not painful. I did feel faint afterward I think it was due to the local so had to sit around a while before driving but was otherwise fine
