DD 15 pill for heavy, painful periods

DD 15 been prescribed Levest combined pill (I understand is same formula as Ridgevidon/ Microgynon) for terribly heavy, painful periods - last one lasted 14 days. She was flooding a ST every couple of hrs throughout.

She's been taking the pill for just under fortnight and started to bleed heavily again 1 week in with awful cramping. Her face is very spotty too. She's so fed up. So sign of it slowing yet.

I know you have to give it 3 months or so for things to settle but any words of experience and encouragement? I had no problems at all when I took the pill. I just feel so sorry for her. It's miserable.

Periods should not be that heavy or painful, often the root cause of that is endometriosis. If finances allow I would pay for your daughter to see a gynaecologist for an initial consultation as waiting lists on the NHS in many areas are miles long for gynaecology.

I would advise her to also keep a daily pain and symptom diary noting all symptoms to show the gynae. Something is causing all this and she needs to know what the causes are.

Speak to GP regarding a meds review. She shouldn’t be bleeding. I have two DDs on (different) pills for period related issues. The pill was not the first medication DD1 was put on for heavy bleeding. Work with your GP and get an urgent appointment for meds review.

Go back to your gp and insist on Yasmin. Gps are reluctant to prescribe it because it’s more expensive.

This is a treating the symptom not the cause situation which hides the cause and makes it much harder to diagnose in the future/not wanting to go through the potential side effects of coming off the pill to investigate.
