How easy is it to get tubes tied?

Hi All,

I don’t really get in with the pill that much and 100% don’t want anymore children. My mum suggested I get sterilised but it’s not something that seems easy to find information on. If I go to my gp what can I expect, is it likely I’ll be told I can’t?

thanks

I was told I absolutely wouldn't get it on the NHS unless I'd tried all other contraceptive options
I also think I was fobbed off
I'd be interested to see what other people's experiences have been

It’s a bigger operation than a vasectomy. Depending on your weight, it requires a hospital stay.
I found it hard to get, but that was years ago. Had to do coil etc.

Very easy to get … when I was having a C/S at the same time!

I asked for an elective section and tubal at the same time and they refused.

There are a lot of factors that will determine whether they agree or not, age being one of the biggest.
I always knew from a young age I never wanted children, and asked at 27 to be sterilised. GP refused saying I was too young. Went back 3 years ago when I was 38 and they agreed, referred me and I had the procedure within 6 months! A simple keyhole day case procedure and the best thing I ever did!

I asked for it to be done after I'd had my children, when I was 34.

I had to push a little for the referral but I'm really glad I had it done.

Thank you, I’ll make an appointment with my gp and see what happens!

It’s very easy, had mine done many years ago
out same day the only horrible bit was the stitches were quite sore , especially when belly skin pulled. Thanks DH 😡

I was refused it at 34 as I was too young, only had 2 DC and hadn’t tried the coil (don’t get on with any other forms of contraception). Oddly the doctor said to me that I might not get on with contraception but it was effective as I wasn’t getting pregnant….im not sure she was very supportive of it really
Im thinking of going back and pushing harder though with another GP to appeal the trusts decisions as that’s what I’ve heard is needed.

I'm currently on a waiting list to be sterilised. I'm 36, 2 teenage children. I've tried various forms of contraception over the years and had several bad experiences. The implant caused periods ever 2 weeks and the coil caused pain.

Through my doctors it was an easy enough process, i had a telephone appointment. She asked my reasons, what contraception i had tried and why me not my husband as a vasectomy is lower risk and quicker recovery. After discussing she put me on the waiting list. It took around 3 months, ive just had the referral appointment at the hospital. The hospital doctor agreed to do the sterilisation and now I'm just waiting. She said it could be 6 months + as it's non urgent.
