Endometrial Biopsy - Very anxious!

Hi all

I've got to have an endometrial biopsy in a couple of weeks and I'm currently up way past bedtime in an anxious spiral about the whole thing. Can anyone share their experience please?

Agreed to have it in the consultants office with a local anaesthetic into my cervix and to just see how it goes. Consultant said the biopsy part should take about 15 seconds.

I previously had a hysteroscopy, polyp removal and biopsy under GA because I was absolutely terrified after reading up online and didn't want bits chopped out of me whilst I was awake. This time it is just the biopsy with (I believe) a small, flexible plastic tube, smaller than the hysteroscope.

I feel dramatic asking for a GA and also know I'd panic about the anaesthetic beforehand so I think the right thing to do for me is to try and hope I can tolerate it.

Would be good to know if people can generally tolerate it or not.

Thanks!

I had mine in an out patient appointment, it was fine, drove home after.
No anaesthetic needed although I have had 2 vaginal births so not completely closed cervix and a lovely female consultant who was really good and talked through every move. I did my breathing and it was all over really quickly and even better no cancer.
Hope this helps and it's not as bad as you fear

Just make sure that doc confirms he will stop immediately if you tell him to. That way, you can relax knowing if you’re one of the people for whom it’s very painful, that you can stop it. I had this. It nipped a bit but wasn't very painful and complete bearable. No anaesthetic Doc respectful and even asked if he should stop when I grimaced. It was very quick.

some people are fine with it - it’s not a pain threshold thing, but your anatomy.

I also had an ok experience and just took paracetamol beforehand plus local anaesthetic. It was over quite quickly and I just closed my eyes and tried to do steady slow breaths although it was during covid so I was wearing a face mask which made it trickier to relax. I've had many procedures and it felt like a slightly more uncomfortable smear test and the biopsy itself was like a short pinch. Bit of cramping afterwards but I think they took 3 samples so that's probably why. I was fine later that afternoon and the results were good too. Good luck!

Thank you all, this is really helpful to hear. That's good it was bearable.

@EvelynBeatrice I will definitely tell them to stop if it's too much. Hoping it will be quick and ok. It does sound like it's completely random who feels a lot of pain and who doesn't.

@RudithJudith glad your results were good too. Great news.

Thanks again!
