Gynae appointment for ovarian cysts

mumof1littlebun · 06/11/2024 14:53

I had a scan which showed cysts on my ovaries, then a blood test and now have a gynae appointment booked. Does anyone know what they will do at this appointment?

it might just be a consultation with the gynaecologist. But it also could be an hysteroscopy to take a biopsy. Some women find hysteroscopy very painful and it is possible to request for it to be done under general anaesthetic.
This is worth a read

Thank you for the reply. I wonder if it might be worth me ringing the hospital to find out? I haven't been told anything!

It's unlikely to be a hysteroscopy if the cysts are on the ovaries - hysteroscopy is used to examine/biopsy the lining of the womb. I'd expect they'll be making a decision on whether the cysts need to be removed, which will be based on their appearance on ultrasound, your symptoms and probably blood tests as well.

@AppropriateAdult I did wonder as I've not been told their will be any biopsies taking place and surely I'd need to be informed? I've also not been told I can't drive if I was or have anaesthetic

If the letter didn't mention a specific procedure it will be a consultation about your results. I've been seen in gynaecology a lot in the past year and the letters are always clear about what to expect if it's an appointment for a procedure.

There won’t be a hysteroscopy.

They may however ask to examine you internally. This is fingers in your vagina and pressing on your lower abdomen with the other hand. You remove your knickers and lie on an examination couch with your legs either in stirrups or in the same position as if you were having a smear test.

They will discuss your test results and whether or not you need further treatment and if so, what the options will be.

mumof1littlebun · 06/11/2024 18:35

@MrsLeonFarrell so a consultation for next steps to see if surgery is needed etc?

More than likely giving you the results and discussing next steps, yes.

mumof1littlebun · 06/11/2024 18:38

I've seen the results of the scan and also of the blood test. Will these be discussed in more detail?

I assume they mention finding something? In which case, yes they will discuss options. One of the good reforms in the NHS is that you don't see a consultant until after tests have been done and they have information to work with.

mumof1littlebun · 06/11/2024 18:44

@MrsLeonFarrell yes cysts on both ovaries and an endometrial polyp. I had the ca 125 blood test result also

I hope you get the appointment soon so that you don't worry too much.

Thank you, it's in a few weeks

I've had gyne appointments previously they were largely to discuss what happens next
I had to have my ovary and fallopian tube removed as my cyst was large and was the type that can twist

mumof1littlebun · 06/11/2024 19:19

@lovemycbf can you remember what type of cyst it was? I have one haemorrhagic and one dermoid

OP posts:
LittleRedRidingBoots · 06/11/2024 19:33

It will very likely just be a discussion, possibly around how to manage the cysts/prevent more with hormones, possibly removal, etc.

I had a haemorrhagic cyst that resolved by itself, but my dermoid cyst had to be removed as it was massive (19cm by the date of removal). They didn't think they'd be able to save my ovary given the size of the cyst. This was all discussed with me at a gynae follow up and I left feeling really reassured.

(Incidentally they couldn't save my ovary but it didn't affect my cycle etc, I've managed ok on one if this does end up being the case for you!).

Good luck!

@LittleRedRidingBoots thank you 😊

Hi an update to this post. I had my appointment cancelled and have just had a new one issued for a hysterectopy. Everything I've read to do with this doesn't mention cysts though and I'm wondering if it's the correct procedure although you'd hope the hospital have seen my scan results regarding the cysts?!

They can do many things using this procedure. If you want details I would ring the hospital and ask about it. They are always happy to explain in my experience
