I'm having a trans vaginal scan on Friday due to suspected fibroids.

Can anyone reassure me as I'm so scared. I'm scared of the procedure and what they might find. It's been so fast so my anxious brain is telling me it's going to be bad news.

I know I need an empty bladder but sometimes (and especially when I'm nervous) it fills up really quickly. Will they let me empty it if I need to during the scan?

I've had what feels like billions of these and genuinely it shouldn't hurt at all. I had a very very gentle consultant who was always apologising and asking if it was uncomfortable but it never was. If you do have fibroids it's not the end of the world. If they put the wand in and you're literally about to pee all over them, they'll tell you it's too full and to go and wee for 10 seconds and then stop and come back.

I've had many trans vaginal scans and have found them to be an absolute non-event. The wand only goes in a very short way, and is pretty narrow so I generally didn't feel much. Every place I've had one had a bathroom available specifically so that patients could empty their bladder if needed. I found them much less invasive and uncomfortable than a smear test for example.

It's a really easy procedure. You hardly feel.it going in. I'm horrendous with smears but not bothered about transvaginal scans.

I have a huge fibroid and it's not a problem at all. It was causing some post menopausal bleeding but I had a coil fitted which stopped it.

Topseyt123 · 29/10/2024 21:35

I've had several of these. They are nothing to worry about. They don't hurt. You will be able to empty your bladder if needed, and also if they deem it necessary during the procedure.

To be honest, I much prefer transvaginal scans to the external tummy scan where a full bladder is required. I just can't maintain a full bladder any more so I would have to insist on transvaginal.

I have fibroids too. They are common, not malignant and only an issue if they grow too big or cause other problems such as very heavy and flooding periods, which mine did. They are are likely to shrink as you go through the menopause, which I now seem to have finally done at 58!!

Thank you all, that's put my mind at ease a lot!

I was the same as you when I went to one for suspected fibroids ! It was absolutely fine, no pain, very nice nurse and consultant who kept me covered the whole time. If you have fibroids there are lots of options if you even need treatment.

I'm the biggest coward going about all things medical but I've had two of these and had no problems at all. There was a toilet right next to the room and they gave me time to go and empty my bladder. They were extremely respectful, there was no pain or discomfort and I was told to just speak up if I wanted them to stop. It was all over in a matter of minutes. The lighting in the room was very dim and my privacy and comfort was their upmost consideration.

I'm worried because GP examined me and said my uterus was like a 12 week pregnant one so I'm panicking there's something nasty in there.

Honestly - the trans vaginal ultrasound is a breeze. I'm probably past 100 Confused of these due to having endo, adeno and loads of rounds of IVF to have our little boy. You will tense up to begin with - it's just natural too but if you try to concentrate on relaxing. You won't feel discomfort as they put a condom in the probe and a shed load of lubricant. I'd recommend taking a panty liner as even after wiping and putting you bottoms on you do get some bits coming out after. I was teaching in the afternoon so that made for an awkward couple of hours feeling damp. If you need a wee to re-empty that's never an issue. Regarding fibroids I've had one removed via hysteroscopy (which was done under general anaesthetic) and the recovery was very straightforward - didn't really feel like I had had anything done compared to laparoscopy surgery. Good luck with it all xx

This could just be a 'bulky womb'. I've got that. It just means you have a big womb. Mine is the size it should be at 6 months pregnant.

Remember GP's are not experts.

Much easier than a smear. Not painful at all. Try not to worry. The main thing is to make sure you are comfortable on the bed before they start.

MummyLovesVS · 30/10/2024 12:44

I've had these and they're very comfortable. No pain at all!

TriangleLight · 30/10/2024 12:45

Absolutely fine, doesn’t hurt. And yes they’ll let you pee again before it
