Bleeding after years of none on Mirena

I’ve been on the Mirena since dd3 was born (13 years). On year 3 of the third coil and I’ve had no issues at all.

Haven’t had a period for pretty much the whole time although maybe once or twice little bits of spotting but really once or twice in 13 years.

Anyway, had a tiny bit of blood yesterday then a bit more today. Still not enough to really be worth using a pad but it’s increased since yesterday.

Has anyone else had that after so long of nothing? Can’t decide if it’s worth trying to make an appointment for, or if it’s perfectly normal?

Are you sure it’s still in there?

I have only ever had breakthrough bleed when the coil is at end of its life - presumably when it’s not working as well.

If relevant I would recommend using some additional contraception until you figure it out.

Certainly haven’t noticed it coming out, but I was wondering if it might be a sign of something not being quite right. Certainly don’t want to take any chances - don’t think I could go back to that stage!

I had none with my first coil then a few years into the second coil I started getting a monthly period.
Much lighter than they were pre coil (which were horrendous) but still annoying.
It coincided with me losing a lot of weight and apparently that does happen with some women.
I am now a year into coil number 3 and still getting a monthly period 😕

Thanks @Kaleidoscope101 - that’s interesting.

I have been losing a bit of weight recently (deliberately), but not bucketloads.

Did you go and see your GP when the periods returned? Did they need to check that it was still there?

I was told that it does happen some times when losing weight (although I did lose a lot).
It was definitely still there as they removed it when the new one was put in.
If in doubt, get it checked

Thanks. Just trying to weigh up the likelihood that’s it’s fine with the likelihood of getting an appointment after sitting on hold for half an hour 🙈

Are you potentially approaching menopause age?

I have had the exact same happen to me in the past 18 months, I am now getting really heavy bleeding after many years of just occasional spotting with Mirena.

I'm 49 now so it probably started when I was about 47 - the Mirena is definitely still in place

I really need to visit the GP again to discuss HRT options but haven't got round to it

mullthatcider · 26/10/2024 07:42

@UltramarineViolet thanks - that also crossed my mind - I’m 43, so I suppose it could be. It only lasted a couple of days and didn’t grow into a full blown period so I think I’ll wait and see if it happens again and maybe then go and have a chat with the GP.

Any unexplained bleeding should be invedtigated. I think you need to see the gp and get it checked out.
