Hi all..

I’m having a laparoscopic hysterectomy and ovary removal next week. I’m absolutely dreading it.

It’s classed as urgent. My GP said yesterday my cervix will also be removed. That’s not my understanding- do I query this as I want to retain as much of me as possible. If that makes sense .

Jeez I am worrying. And straight into a surgical menopause too. Hideous.
Can anyone who has had this procedure help/ ease my anxiety?
Recovery time- how long please ?
Man I feel sick with worry.

I've been thinking about you, OP, and hope that you're either recovering nicely from a smooth procedure or that, if your operation is in the next few days, your anxiety has mellowed and you're feeling a little less worried.

Take care and give yourself plenty of time to recover.

For anyone having it done, I can recommend Rennie Deflatine for the gas pain, when I had my second laparoscopy, I was handing them out like smarties to the other women on the ward.

I'm on day three after my full laparoscopic hysterectomy, I hope that yours went as well as mine. No one could have been more terrified than I was, and it wasn’t that bad after all.

Interested reading these, I'm due my hysterectomy next month , can't wait and terrified too !

gettingolderbutcooler · 07/11/2024 21:57

I had mine in June. Out the next day. Pain from the op wasn't bad. But the wind pain- ow! It passes. Keep on doing little walks.
Enjoy the pre and post op fentanyl!
Don't worry. It's as if I haven't had an op now. Back to horse riding and running for past few months. X

I'm 32 and had a total hysterectomy last year ovaries and all. Despite extremely poor health it was totally fine, no where near as bad as I was expecting. I even managed without strong painkillers like morphine sulphate I stopped using it after the first day. The recovery was a lot quicker than expected too, I had to stay in for longer but that was due to other health issues not the op itself

Good luck you will be totally fine

Jealous of the good drugs. I got some paracetamol post-op! I was still fine though. Good luck to everyone with upcoming ops. I hope this thread has offered some comfort hearing so many of us through the other side.

I was in and out of hospital the same day.

You'll need some extra support at home for a few days I'd have thought although mine was just friends dropping in a few times a day.

Back on my feet within 10 days I'd say.

Good luck

Why will she need extra support please? I had understood the only thing you couldn't do was carry heavy things. I presumed that if I had the op I'd be able to warm up myself some food and make it to the toilet. Is that not right?
(I am avoiding having one, but my symptoms aren't serious).

You are told that you shouldn't even lift a kettle full of water. The surgery involves a lot of rearranging of your internals... Doing too much on your own can set you back. I stupidly bent up and down a few times loading a washing into the machine on day three and started bleeding. I just burst some internal stitching apparently. She might also be a bit dizzy and depending on pain management could be a bit out of it. It's important to drink lots and eat enough to keep your energy up for healing well. If you're tired and groggy you are less likely to do this yourself.

There are also risks from surgery like blood clotting so having someone keeping an eye on you is preferable. Not to mention that the compression socks are an absolute bugger to get on and off and with abdominal pain and stitches it can be tricky to change them yourself.

I hope everything went well for you OP. I’ve found this thread very helpful - I’m finally having my total hysterectomy (fibroids) in two weeks, after a very long wait. I’m feeling nervous, but relieved it’s finally happening.

Every surgeon has their own preferred ways of managing this situation. Because I had a full horizontal incision I was given an epidural. He preferred this to opioids.
