Copper coil nightmare

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but here we go.

I had a copper coil fitted nearly three weeks ago. I am now on my period, and have been for the last 7 days. I knew it could make periods heavier and longer, but mine are normally 4 days long. I have been up for four hours so far, and am on my fifth pad (I was told no tampons for 6 weeks which is horrific enough in itself).
And oh my god the pain. I honestly just want to curl in a ball and cry. Does it get better? Is it worth waiting to see? Or do I just make an appointment to get the bloody thing out. No pun intended.
I can't go through this every month. Although, it may just be the best contraception ever, as no chance of me letting a man anywhere near me at all for the foreseeable....

It is really normal for periods to be heavier and longer I’m afraid, and it does take a few months to settle down. Only you know if it’s worth it for the convenience of not taking a pill every day or having hormones in whatever way - I persevered because I really didn’t want hormonal contraception.

Having said that 5 pads in 4 hours does sound like way too much and I’d get that looked at tbh. Without frightening you there was a problem with my first one which in the end was only figured out when they took it out, but I bled almost all the time for months. The difference when they put another one in was night and day. So if it’s really bothering you it might just be that coils not right and it’s not coils in general if that makes sense.

@Usernamesarenoteasy Hi op I'm on my third copper coil and I remember feeling exactly like you did the first period I had , it did settle down for me but it does take a few months . Periods for me are longer and heavier with the coil but I can't have anything with hormones so I don't have a choice. Definitely give it a few months to settle down though it does get better.

My first 6 months were absolutely dreadful - long, heavy and irregular. It did settle down though, and now they're shorter, lighter and much less painful than before the copper coil.

Op it took about 2-3 months to get back to the normal.
Although with copper coil your period could be few more days longer then before.

@SherlockHolmess @Tittyfilarious

Thank you both for your quick responses!

I really did want to stay off hormonal contraception if possible, the pill does very strange things to me, the Depo I was spotting constantly for 6 moths, and when I came off it I bled for 39 days full on. No way I was going to try the implant after that, and thought the copper coil would be my best bet. I'm glad to hear it does get better though.

And thanks Sherlock, I have never used pads in my life, so I have no idea of what is normal or not with them. I just know I absolutely hate them! Given what you said if there is no change by this afternoon I'll give the clinic a ring and have a chat with them.

This happened to me with the copper coil. Non stop bleeding. I had to have it replaced with a mirena, no issues with that.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 22/10/2024 13:07

Thanks all. It seems to have settled down a bit now, and the pain is almost gone so hopefully this is nearly the end of it!

@JasmineTea11 The mirena sounds ideal, for most people, but as I have issues with other hormonal contraception I didn't want to go risk it if I didn't have to.

Hi. OP, invest in a few pairs of period pants from Marks and Spencer. Much much easier than pads and they cope with a lot of bleeding.

I tried but abandoned the coil in my 30s, we just went back to condoms.
