I got a UTI this morning. after a very enjoyable weekend. I started the 4g granules of sodium citrate for the oral solution at tea time.

There is a little bit of blood but more the overwhelming goosebumps feeling, a bit being sick. This feeling started and although it ebbs and flows in intensity, it has been constant and I am in hell. There is a little blood. When I do go to the loo, nothing seems to come out but my body is spasming in some way as if wretching. It's awful

Nitrofurantoin stops me breathing. I tried trimethoprim but found it ineffective.

It's very painful, I've been there. I don't know what those medications are but you probably need antibiotics. Take some paracetamol and get some rest.

Regarding going to the loo, I wear a pad as only tiny amounts come out.

Ring 111. You need a proper assessment and some antibiotics.

They are both antibiotics.

They are both antibiotics.

There are other antibiotics that may work.

Here’s what works for me:

  • 1 teaspoon of bicarb dissolved in a pint of water. Drink a glass of this every hour. It neutralises your pee and stops the sting.
  • Painkillers.
  • A hot water bottle clenched tightly between your legs. Wear a pad and if you need to wee, just wee. It’s usually a tiny dribble. I find the pressure and heat of the hot water bottle helps.
  • Sit in a bath & wee if you need to.
  • if the standard antibiotics don’t work. They can send a urine sample away to see exactly which ones you need.
AdviceNeeded2024 · 22/10/2024 01:08

You need to seek medical help before it gets worse for some kind of (different) anti-biotic. Blood in urine and nausea suggests you might get a kidney infection, do you have lower back pain?

I went through a phase where I used to suffer terribly with UTI’s so I feel for you they are awful. Nothing really worked for me bar a heat pad for the pain and antibiotics.

You said you didn't know what the meds in the op's post were so I told you.

I thought I was responding to the OP.

I'm sorry you are suffering. This won't help now but may help prevent in the future. After several UTis in a short space of time I now take daily cranberry supplements. Thankfully nothing in over a year now.

QuestionableMouse · 22/10/2024 11:42

You might want to start d-mannose @Entertainmentcentral but for now I hope you've seen a doctor. ☺️

ToBeOrNotToBee · 22/10/2024 11:45

It sounds horrific I'm so sorry for you.
When I get bad UTIs, my biggest pain and discomfort is from urination, which then makes me hold wee (making it worse) and gives me bladder pain.
To completely empty bladder I found dribbling a jub of warm water as I'm sat on the toilet really helped. It soothes the pain and makes the urethra relax.
It really works honestly.

Have you called your GP (assuming you're in the UK)? At ours you can call and they'll put the papers and bottle for a urine test on reception for you to collect (you can use their loos to do the sample). The results come back v quickly. If you have a history of UTIs (as my relative does) you then get a call to say there's a prescription ready for you. You may not need to see a doctor at all.

Trimethoprim also doesn't work for my relative so she had it put on her records so they don't prescribe it for her.
