Are your smears up to date? I had spotting with ovulation every now and then and it turned out I had cin3 abnormal cervical cells. Once removed the spotting stopped.

@YourFunMember Yeah they are up to date! Think the next one is due next year. I've been taking 'conception vitamins' and as soon as I've stopped taking them its stopped but I don't know what in them could cause it

When you had your CIN3 confirmed, were your smears up to date. Wondering if this can happen within time frames for smear testing.
Dud you have them removed ok?

YourFunMember · 23/12/2024 23:25

Yes @Hi7

i was actually on annual recall so id gone from normal to cin3 in 1 year

Oh my goodness! I bet that was a shock for you. So glad to know that the cells are all removed. It’s been two years since my last smear and not due for another.
If you don’t mind me asking, were you Hpv negative at last smear? I know they said I was which meant they didn’t check my sample for abnormalities.
Also, was your spotting just once a month or more often? Post coital or just random?
Mine seems to me around when ovulation should be.
I had no idea that CIN could develop so quickly

@Hi7 yes I was HPV negative so the sample wasn’t checked. I then had a private smear which had the same negative result with no abnormal cells. I can’t afford another private one at the moment but when I can I’ll have another.

I can’t really remember tbh as it was a few years ago now. It was around ovulation, I didn’t have it every month that I recall and it was a really small amount. I didn’t have post coital bleeding. I didn’t correlate it to a cervical problem, assumed it was hormonal if I’m honest but the fact it stopped after my procedure says to me it was linked.

I did query it with the nurse and she said to remember a smear test is a screening only, and it is only a sample so it could have been missed. I don’t know though tbh, I’d been in annual recall for 3 years due to being HPV positive and all prior smears were clear. I do think it just developed really fast but I’d been positive for a long time. I knew I’d be invited for colposcopy if still positive as they do that as a precaution but yes, seeing CIN3 on the letter was scary. I was actually on my period but because I was CIN3 they insisted on seeing me anyway rather than changing the date.

good luck x

Please know smears cannot detect any chance of endometrial cancer, only cervical cancer.

Mid cycle spotting can be a sign of endometrial hyperplasia which if left untreated may lead to endometrial cancer.

The only way to be diagnosed is an ultrasound and then if needed an endometrial biopsy. Your GP should refer you for an ultrasound if the spotting continues.

If you are on hrt there are guidelines for referral there too.
