Itchy outer vagina

I keep getting intense itchiness where my pubic hair is. I’m not pregnant-not been near a man in 5 years plus. Thought it may be my shower gel but changed back to my regular one and it’s still itchy. It’s not stubble rash itch either. It’s not constant, just starts randomly. I’m 40. Is this a peri symptom 🙄 any suggestions, it’s horrible!

I found E45 cream helped with itching on the pubic hair area. If experiencing itching on the vulva, you could try emollient ointment like Epaderm or Hydromol.

Toilet paper containing irritants has been mentioned. You could look at buying bleach and perfume free toilet paper, for example Cheeky Panda. Also also look at anything else that could cause irritation to the external area for example pads and liners (check out TOTM).

if using moisturiser doesn’t help, it would probably be a good idea to see a doctor. I’ve attached the GSM symptom checker and the book mentioned above is a very good read (no nothing to do with the clinic mentioned in the panorama program @MollyRover)

It could be menopause. Happens to me at night. Sometimes feels like insects are crawling around in my groin. I've found wiping with a cold wet flannel at night helps. I'm a bit incontinent too so wear Always day and night.

I've tried estriol cream,
Steroid cream
Caneston,
Daktakort
Sudocreme.

Something it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I am 27 OP and get random, intense bouts of this. It drives me insane and is so intense but I'm obviously not peri

Mine was thrush. Didn't have any discharge. And the creams and pessaries didn't work - I had to take anti fungal tablets for 3 months and it vanished after about 2 years of suffering

It made me so miserable. There's a gel type cream you can buy from Boots that instantly stops it and offers relief - It's called Eureux (spelling might be wrong), and it's the instant cooling one

Yes! Post-menopause for me but it's been driving me nuts for months now. I'm on HRT. It's so bloody itchy around my mon pubis/clit area (sorry for the TMI). I didn't know if I had a UTI which was causing it or even stupidly acidic wee. The menopause is just the gift that keeps on giving 😩

I get this regularly. Take an antihistamine and use Sudocreme

Hopefully that should be enough.

Seaweed42 · 06/10/2024 01:07

Could be localized dermatitis. Ask your GP for a steroid ointment. I had this and Betnovate ointment stopped the itch straightaway.

It was random but definitely triggered by hormones though and alcohol too set it off, esp white wine strangely enough. I was miserable until I got that steroid cream.

You mention being on HRT - are you using any topical estrogen too? This should help symptoms in the urethral tract and on the vulva /clitoris by improving the tissue. My doctor prescribed a steroid ointment first to help reduce the inflammation.
You could also try the moisturisers mentioned above which can be used as often as needed, and the emollient can also be used to wash with

I started getting itchy vulva around 40 so I looked it up. It's most likely a peri symptom, as things start to dry out they can start to itch.

wavyleaf · 06/10/2024 09:52

I had this too - for over a year - and it stopped when I started HRT recently. I hadn’t realised it was a peri symptom.

Scarlettpixie · 06/10/2024 10:15

I have Betnovate RD cream from the gp for this. Only thing that works for me. It flares up now and again but a couple of days of use calms things down. I am 52 so think it is related to peri/dryness. I have been single for 6 years.
