PCOS Bloods

Hi all

I have a blood test next week to test for PCOS.

The doctor didn't mention having to fast, which makes me think I don't need to. However, after a quick google I'm not wondering on if I should or not.

I don't know the exact bloods that are being tested so I'm aware that's not much help.

Has anyone else been tested recently and know the answer?

Test is at 9:15 so not an issue if I do have to fast, I don't normally eat until 9:30 anyway. Just worried that the results might not be accurate if I've fasted and I didn't need to.

I didn't have to fast it was a hormone level test and mine found high testosterone. Usually fasting is for things like diabetes where they're looking at glucose which is affected by what you eat.

Good to know, thank you.

They now tend to do Hba1c if testing for insulin resistance which is linked to PCOS. You do not need to fast for it.

Previously the blood glucose was a fasting test.

You should fully know what hormone levels are going to be tested in advance.

You do not need to fast.

What they should be doing is a day 2 test to check and compare your LH (luteinising hormone) level against that of FSH (follicle stimulation hormone). With PCOS there is usually an imbalance of LH to FSH. Your doctor may check your blood for levels of androgens including testosterone, which tends to be higher in women with PCOS.

Not all PCOS patients are insulin resistant. Its a very individualistic disorder that affects each woman with it very differently.

I don’t think I fasted either 😊

Thank you everyone.

I'll assume I don't need to fast then. Especially as the doctor never told me to. I was just worried she may have forgot, she seemed in a hurry to get off the phone.

In an ideal world yes 9/10 it's a complete surprise and when asked you get a fob off "full screening" or "everything".

Insulin resistance and diabetes is linked to PCOS. Not everyone has it but it is a good idea to test for it especially if there are another symptoms.
