Perimenopause, HRT and womb lining thickness

Hi, I am 45 and perimenopausal. I have been on HRT for just over a year now. Everything was great but last month my period lasted over three weeks and was very heavy, I had a pelvic scan where I was told the lining of my womb is 8.5mm, this was not long after that big bleed.

I have now been referred on the two week pathway for a hysteroscopy and looking at my NHS notes it says “suspected gynaecological cancer.” I am terrified and upset about both the procedure which is on 7 Oct, but also the results. Any thoughts or similar situations would be appreciated xxx

Oh i am so sorry to hear this. I did have bleeding on HRT but it only lasted about 5 days. They found my womb lining had thickened.

I never saw my notes.

Tests on the lining were clear and i re started HRT. I didn't have a hysteroscopy i don't think.

I stayed fully conscious. They took a biopsy bit of the lining after measuring.

If this is cancer - and it might not be - liklihood is it's contained within the womb. I know the prospect of a hysterectomy is daunting but if it gets all the cancer away, then your future is bright.

That is what i hope i could think in your situation.

Try not to worry. So far as I’m aware hyperplasia is fairly common. I’ve had a biopsy, as did my sister and two friends after bleeding for more than the first 6 months on HRT and after ultrasounds found hyperplasia. All of us fine. Sister upped her progesterone prescription; I chose to come off HRT ( and recent ultrasound showed my womb lining is back to ordinary parameters). Usually they suggest an IUD if alls fine and you want to continue with HRT. I didn’t want one.

As for the procedure, no need to be scared provided you know that they will stop
if you tell them it’s too painful. Then they’ll offer you another appointment for a general anaesthetic. I didn’t have hysteroscopy but biopsy. Wasn’t fun but managed ok with deep breathing. Definitely not agony. Key thing is to know that if it’s gets too bad, tell them to stop. Best of luck.
