Period issues

For the past 3-4 years I've had issues with my cycle. It started in spring of 2021 when my period disappeared for a few months, the same thing happened the following two years. I always diet hard after Christmas so I thought it was linked to that. This year though I've only had about 3 periods and the last one was 6 weeks ago. Prior to this, I had one every 4-5 weeks, though never reliably the same sort of time. I did start them quite late though, at 16. I'm in my early 30s, slim (but not underweight by a long margin). I'm trying to up my calories as it does seem linked to my diet, but my BMI about 20 and I eat loads volume wise, lots of healthy stuff.

I know I should go to the doctors but frankly I'm so scared. I can't face the idea of an examination! Is there anything else I can do to try and get things back myself? Weirdly I do still get some mild cramping and often thing they're about to return, then nothing.

I'm not very good about talking about things like this and I find it so embarrassing. Only my husband knows.

They probably wouldn’t examine you, and you can refuse any way. I’d guess they’d order blood tests.
Have you googled the symptoms of PCOS?

Kindlingdwindling · 15/09/2024 16:19

Thank you for replying! Blood tests would be fine. Yes, I had a look but apart from the period issues and potentially fertility issues, I don't have any of them symptoms.

My DD was diagnosed with this and the consultant told her to put some weight on. I think her BMI was about 18.

Such issues can be possible indicators of PCOS and you should be checked to see if this is present. It can be diagnosed via blood tests; you need a day 2 test done to compare your LH level against that of FSH. With PCOS there is often an excess of LH compared to FSH. An internal ultrasound scan could also be done to assess the state of your ovaries (a polycystic ovary appears larger than a normal size ovary and has a ring of pearls appearance to it). A normal size ovary is about the size of a walnut.

PCOS is a very individualistic disorder and affects each women with it very differently.

Please do not be embarrassed to have a chat with your GP about this issue.

How is your daughter now @DustyLee123 I hope she is doing OK.

Thanks for replying @AttilaTheMeerkat. I had an ultrasound a few years ago (and external one, I don't think I could imagine an internal one) for an unrelated issue and they did look at my ovaries then and didn't suggest any issues. I have a lot of stomach pain/issues. They could be related but I've had the stomach problems for 10 years or so. I'll read up a bit more about PCOS. Thank you.

So any typos! I meant the symptoms and manage not imagine!

I'm not embarrassed about talking it through with the doctor but it's the possible investigations that put me off. I've only had one smear test, when I turned 25, and it was extremely traumatic and painful so it's put me off massively.

You need up to date test results; anything done over 6 months ago should be discounted.

What sort of stomach pain/issues are you having?. Are these cyclical in nature i.e coincide with your periods?. How did that start?.
