Itchy head!

Flowery57 · 14/09/2024 09:12

My head has been incredibly itchy for a few weeks now and is driving me mad. My husband has had a good look a few times and and apart from red patches can’t see anything else (so definitely not nits).
I have tried tea tree oil shampoo and also a very mild, organic children’s shampoo but nothing seems to help. I wash my hair every other day.
Has anyone else experienced this or can help please?

Have you used a nit comb on wet hair? It's not that easy to spot lice (unless you're a 1970s nit nurse).

I've never seen a louse on ds2's hair but I've combed out many dozens over the years.

This is pretty much what I was going to post.

What products do you use on your hair? I react to a lot of hair products, apparently lots of people develop allergies to the preservatives in them so it might be that.

I used Neutrogena T gel shampoo twice a week to help calm the irritation, this took a few weeks to work. My normal shampoo is Gruum shampoo bars (no preservatives in it because it's a bar) and I also use their conditioner bar and that combination keeps my scalp happy. I don't use any other product on my hair. When I go to the hairdresser I ask them to use shampoo for sensitive scalps but if I forget I have to wash my hair when I get home to remove the products they use, if it's on too long (overnight) I can feel my skin getting irritated and then it takes a week or so to calm down.

Vosene for kids tea tree shampoo is very good and antihistamine to help with itching.

First rule out nits with a fine comb and conditioner. I was hugely surprised to catch them as an adult from a friend’s child. Then if not that, it could be peri menopausal. I use Nizoral as I get itchy and dry sometimes. It’s not going to work for everyone if it’s perimenopausal but with me, it was causing scalp dermatitis (red flaky patches) to flare up and I hadn’t experienced it since puberty. If these two don’t work see your GP ….HRT and a scalp lotion may help? I also have Betacap for flare ups.

When I have this it's a shampoo allergy. I'm yet to find the ingredients that causes it but if I switch shampoos and use an antihistamine it goes. The organic shampoos are typically worse for it!

I haven’t but my husband had a good look with his laser eyes! Plus we don’t have children living with us now but worth a try … thank you 🙏

Mines the same. I’ve checked my hair with a nit comb and conditioner but couldn’t find anything. I am using a natural tea tree oil shampoo so I am wondering if it could be the tea tree oil.

Menopausal symptom?

Flowery57 · 15/09/2024 08:56

Thanks everyone for replying to me and I will definitely try some of these suggestions. It is now around my neck. I asked the pharmacist for advice, showed him the photos and he advised me to see my GP.

I've had this on the back of my head every now and again since menopause. All red and really itchy. I thought I was maybe burning my head with the hairdryer but not really sure. It's ok at the moment and I've been careful not to let my head get too hot. Hope you get it sorted.
