If so, how do you do it? What do you attribute (lifestyle wise) your good energy levels to?

feel like I’m wading through jelly so need ideas please

I’m 50s and have lots of energy. What’s your diet like? Do you sleep well?
I try to eat only whole foods, no junk, loads of veg and fruit etc. I drink lots of water . I walk every day( with dog) and I’m very lucky to sleep very well (7/8 hrs a night). I do drink a little at the weekend but don’t smoke.I would look at :
food
sleep
exercise
stress

If all optimal, seek gp advice.

I'm late 40s and feeling ok. I take wellwoman, try and eat a balanced diet. Only one or two caffeinated drinks a day. Small dc means I have the same early ish bedtime and getting up time mostly. Fairly stable home and work life. I don't drink.

LyricalGangsta · 09/09/2024 17:12

Eat real foods
Exercise
Get good sleep

LyricalGangsta · 09/09/2024 17:12

And yes, avoid alcohol. It really does not process well now I'm past 40

Uncertain111 · 09/09/2024 17:15

Thank you I am trying with those things but need to try harder - good to hear it really is that simple though!

It may be simple, but what works for us may not work for you! Getting things like thyroid and iron levels checked can help to identify if there's anything amiss. Good sleep, healthy but adequate diet, exercise and manageable stress levels are also good to think about. Oh and inspiration is important too - make sure you are listening to and looking at active women in their 40s and beyond so you know what can be possible - Alex Rotas' photography and the Hit Play not Pause Podcast are great sources.

Strokethefurrywall · 09/09/2024 17:29

I'm 45 next month - feel great! Plenty of sleep, loads of exercise, no alcohol and I eat a whole food, plant based diet (no meat or dairy). Don't get aches/pains, little to no inflammation after hard work outs/runs.

Have the mirena coil to help with my previously heavy periods and don't feel any difference in my moods throughout the month.

Imalongtimepostingmum · 09/09/2024 17:34

I eat really well. High ferritin. Vitamins. HRT.
Absolutely on my knees by 8pm every night.
I do have the mirena coil which doesn't help as obvs there's endless progesterone floating around me.

LostittoBostik · 09/09/2024 19:03

Just posting here to ask if anyone has any idea what painful ankles and feet might be in early 40s. Taking iron. I exercise, walk a lot every day too, diet could be better but working on it. Doing fine for energy generally but probably too highly caffinated. Heavy periods, but getting a Mirena fitted soon. Could it be a vitamin deficiency? Started off just being sore in the mornings but now it's lasting a lot of the day.

greengreyblue · 09/09/2024 19:04

Footwear?

greengreyblue · 09/09/2024 19:05

I have heel pain in one foot. Probably plantar fasciitis. I use a foot roller and that helps. I try to wear running shoes for long walks.

AutumnComing2 · 09/09/2024 19:05

@LostittoBostik dropping oestrogen levels - HRT stopped my joint pain within few days.

Bosabosa · 09/09/2024 19:06

Resistance training has massively helped me and is the only thing ever to have improved how my body feels and looks. Hugely helps energy levels

greengreyblue · 09/09/2024 19:06

Yeah I’m not on systemic HRT just Ovestin.

goingdownfighting · 09/09/2024 19:08

Ok. I have managed to improve this but it has been hard.

Firstly get yourself to the docs and get some bloods.

Get more sleep. Prioritise it. I had to stop caffeine after 1pm, take magnesium and down tools at 9pm.

Take a multivitamin at the very least.

Cut down alcohol

Yoga or Pilates.

Solitude

Nourish yourself. Cut down upfs, refined sugars. Up your protein intake.

BigHoops · 09/09/2024 19:15

I'm 45, I do drink alcohol and my energy levels seem fine - I work full time and gave small DC so obviously that has an impact, but that aside I think I'm ok. I do exercise a lot and I definitely feel it when I've had a day of eating rubbish.

Think things will change once the perimenopause kicks in though!

Beth216 · 09/09/2024 19:27

Reducing stress is a huge one for me, as others say eating well, sleeping well and getting some exercise are really important. I also take an A - Z vitamin quite regularly and omega 3's.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 09/09/2024 19:35

I felt like this having just turned 40, turns out I am anaemic, low ferritin, B12 deficient and my thyroid is on the blink. Go to the doctor and get some blood tests at least to time anything else out. I put the tiredness down to life for ages until my hair started falling out

LostittoBostik · 09/09/2024 22:20

AutumnComing2 · 09/09/2024 19:05

@LostittoBostik dropping oestrogen levels - HRT stopped my joint pain within few days.

It's not really the bones though, more the flexibility/tendons. At some point I'll have to see a doctor but loads of other shit going on at the moment. Life is too busy.

AutumnComing2 · 10/09/2024 19:31

@LostittoBostik honestly I didn’t think it would be such a difference to how ‘sore’ my body felt until I had an issue with oestrogen dropping and getting my HRT right again was brill. I exercise daily, run 3x a week, walk min 12k steps a day, swim and cycle so it wasn’t fitness with me. I’d wake in the morning and the soles of my feet just hurt to walk on, my hip was stiff and achy.
My sister didn’t take HRT and is constantly saying her body just aches and hurts despite loads vitamins and a very healthy diet.

Spomb · 10/09/2024 19:38

I feel like I have a lot of energy. I drink more than I should, diet is ok not great at the moment, and I do minimal exercise. But, I have a toddler so I think that keeps my energy levels up!! I feel like I definitely have more energy now than in my 30s.

Potsgirl · 10/09/2024 19:42

Be careful not to just blame low energy on your age and assume that healthy eating and exercise will fix it. Sometimes that is the case, but it could also be any number of actual medical things. Vitamin deficiencies, thyroid issues, sleep apnea, autoimmune conditions... Or perimenopause.

I always used to blame my tiredness on laziness or whatever but it turned out to be autoimmune hypothyroidism.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 10/09/2024 19:45

Early 50s. No HRT. I'm menopausal now but the only peri symptoms in my 40s were period related.

For me the key to good, constant energy levels is controlling blood sugar. I fast at least 16 hours out of 24 and aim to eat a low GI diet. No added sugar, no refined carbs, no UPF.

When I've got the food under control I only suffer from low energy if I'm genuinely tired through vigorous exercise or not enough sleep. And even then I can manage ok, just need an early night.
