Contraceptive inplant

Hi all.

I had the implant fitted about 8 weeks ago 3 months after the birth of my baby.

After about a week I started bleeding and since then I've had a few days here and there that I haven't bled but apart from that I have bled every day. Sometimes brown discharge and some days full on period.

How long did you give it and did it settle? It's really getting me down. I was on the pill prior to this and had a 4 day bleed in my 7 days window so this is not what I'm used to.

Thanks

Like most forms of contraception, it agrees with some women but not others - when I had the implant put in, I ended up bleeding heavily for 6 months+ and ended up begging to have it removed (it wasn't being used for contraception though, in my case) as the bleeding led to me feeling exhausted all the time and was highly impractical for a young woman just trying to live her life (I feared having an accident when I was out and about constantly). Some people get no bleeding at all on it though, others just some spotting - I wish I knew why!

I had previously had the injection and then had the implant. I bled sporadically after the first year. It was horrendous. Couldn’t wait for them to remove it.

As Moonlight said, it won't help to hear about others' experiences because it's so different for every woman. The implant stops my periods completely, for example.

If it's already getting you down I would set a deadline of 12 of 16 weeks to see if the bleeding stops. I have heard of women having to fight to get an implant removed before expiry so beware you may need to be insistent.

I had the same problem. Eventually had it removed.

That's what happened with me - as I said I wasn't using it for contraception (I have a hormonal imbalance and the Dr recommended it to try and regulate my periods), I had to really fight to get it removed because it's apparently so cost-effective to the NHS compared to other methods, that they wouldn't generally want to take it out before the 6 months point, even though that's not what I was using it for.

They even put me on a combined pill at one point too to see if it helped settle the bleeding, but for me it didn't improve things at all and just messed with my emotions etc.
