Was my dentist being overly concerned?
I had a 9:00 am appointment today for extraction of a back tooth. I am on some medications ( losartan, mebeverine ) and before the dentist started preparing me he asked if i had any changes to my medications. I have recently been prescribed bendroflumethiazide so he asked more questions about this and decided to take my blood pressure before starting work. I hadnt taken my morning medication before leaving the house as i would be back home in time to take it without rushing.
My pressure was 179/110

Seeing this he said he couldn't possibly commence work but would reschedule . I was to go straight home ,take the meds and lie down for at least a couple of hours then take my blood pressure again. Then if it hadnt significantly reduced to go to a&e.
He was even concerned at me walking to my car and driving for 10 minutes to get home.

I have done exactly as he stated and am now lying comfortably on my bed.

Im just wondering if i would really need to go to a&e if my blood pressure doesnt reduce. Any ideas what else i can do?

I have recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure .. attached is the range where immediate action is recommended.

It is possible that it was an anomaly, did he take more than one reading? Sometimes the first can be high. Have you taken your blood pressure since you got home? What is it now?

I don't know anything about your medication or how they might interact with the medications for a tooth extraction or with each other ...

I have high blood pressure and have been taking steps to reduce it before medication, the Balance Sleep app which is free, is helping me to lower my breathing and spend more time in a state of relaxation but this might not be enough.

I am also taking steps to reduce sleep apnea and this is also helping... again.. not an emergency solution.

I would phone 111 and ask to speak to a doctor.

Reading the 'similar threads' on here... people seem quite relaxed about high readings..

They also suggest avoiding caffeine and drinking lots of water.

Welcome to my world, Ive been left in agony for over a month ( dental ) because my BP is uncontrolled atm

However the GP is working on it ( trying different drugs ) and it is stabilising and they have added a beta blocker to the mix to stabilise my pulse as well as that was racing as well ( probably the worry of the BP tbh )

Dentist IME are vary wary about treating when the BP is high

I have been hospitalised a couple of times over the years, but thats been when its scary high - diastolic being around the 200 mark

Has you BP come down? And what are your usual readings? Not taking your meds and the stress of being in the dentist for treatment would raise it so as long as it has come down and your usual readings are good I wouldnt be too concerned but do mention it when you go for your BP review .
