Mini pill woes. Which pill is the best pill?

MugfullOfColdCoffee · 01/09/2024 19:38

Was on norgeston for three months and couldn't stand it.
Sore breasts, mood swings, bleeding for 18 days per month, nausea and headaches.
thought enough was enough and tried another mini pill that was recommended for me - noriday.
I'm two weeks in and I'm constantly bloated, nauseous, gassy and cramping!
Anyone have any positive stories with the mini pill?

They are all synthetic progesterone so I guess if it doesn't suit you it's likely none of them will?

Progesterone only and indeed the combined pill never controlled my bleeding Angry

That's a fair point... honestly at my wits end with birth control!

I initially struggled and my GP recommended Logynon. I think she said it would be better because it gives you different amounts of hormones throughout the month rather than a standard amount every day.

Combined pill controlled my bleeding (I took them back to back for 6 months at a time)

when I had to come off combined they put me on the mini pill. It did take a couple of attempts to find the right one. I'm now on Cerelle and haven’t bled for 10 years

you do need to give them 6 months or so to see how you'll react long term to them

I am impatient. I never had to adjust to my combined pill way back when I was younger - ugh.

Are you able to take the combined pill or do you have a risk factor like high weight, high blood pressure, smoker, over age 50?

Desogestrel based mini pills have a 12 hour window and are more likely to stop you ovulating

That pill is a combined pill rather than a mini pill

DVT due to illness and injury.

Can you push to be sterilised if your family is complete?

PinkArt · 01/09/2024 20:14

I get on best with Cerazette. I don't know what the actual differences between them all are but some of the others made me feel a bit flat emotionally.

This is a desogestrel based mini pill with a 12 hour window. There are several others e.g.cerelle and zelleta, etc

Have you considered the coil ; either copper or hormonal?

Madamswearsalot · 01/09/2024 20:24

I don’t have an answer but recently came across this website: https://thelowdown.com/ where you can see other people’s reviews of contraceptive pills and hopefully make an informed decision on what might be right for you.

Cerazette is great for me

OnTheBoardwalk · 01/09/2024 21:13

@MugfullOfColdCoffee you do need to give it time. I had a bad time to start off with

as you said combined doesn’t seem to make a difference what type but mini does

if you aren’t getting the support you need from your Drs do what I had to do and take pictures and show them what’s going on

Yes I'm aware of what the pill I take is and what the mini/ POP pill is, given we are on a thread about just that! After blood clots from the combined pill I am very aware of different types of pill.
What I was referring to is that I don't know is scientifically why the different types of mini pill I've taken have affected me in different ways - cerelle in fact being one example of a mini pill I didn't get on with amazingly.

solice84 · 02/09/2024 18:23

I've got an appt with the nurse tomorrow and I'm gonna ask to try one without desogestral (probably spelled that totally wrong ) as I can not be bothered with 6 months of constant bleeding before it settles down
But no doubt an attempt will be made to convince me to try the coil
Not happening

I wasn't giving the info for your benefit but for the benefit of the OP as she hasn't tried a desogestrel mini pill. I was pointing out the different brands of the same type of pill.

I didn't have constant bleeding with cerazette (desogestrel pill). I had 1 period and then they stopped and I only had the occasional period during the years I took it.

Beautifulweeds · 02/09/2024 18:28

I've found the mirena coil to be a game changer! No pills, no periods, less PMT, bloody brilliant 👏 👌

I had the mirena for 5 years but had to get it removed under general anaesthetic because the strings went awol and noone could get it out. I had several people rummaging about trying to find it!

Then dh had a vasectomy so I don't need to use anything now

solice84 · 02/09/2024 18:34

I think it's very individual
I bled for months on end on Cerazette
Once it settles down it's fine but if you stop taking and start again it's more months of constant bleeding

MigGril · 02/09/2024 18:59

desogestrel, is actually the only one I've taken but I'm assuming my gp gave me this one for a reason as its more likely to stop your periods and I have terrible migraines. It did take 4 months for it to settle down though, I seem to have that problem with any type of conception I take though. It takes a while for my body to adjust.

Justploddingonandon · 02/09/2024 19:33

Desogrestal works for me and mostly stops my period but I did get 3 months constant bleeding when starting it ( was just about to ask for something else when bleeding stopped).

solice84 · 03/09/2024 19:16

So I went to gp today and was just given cerzazette again
Apparently the others , the ones with the 3 hours window , are used 'more for emergency contraception ' 🤔
I was also told I wouldn't be considered for sterilisation until I'd tried a coil and implant . Which won't be happening
